The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (A Puffin Book)

Ripping adventure, some dated attitudes
As good as I remember, a great and eccentric adventure story. Look out for dated attitudes - those these are mostly put in the beak of Polynesia the parrot. (Which is odd, since she comes from Africa?) Prince Bumpo reappears, now a student at Oxford where he's enjoying himself, though he can't get used to shoes. His face was whitened in an earlier story (yes, I know), but he has gone back to normal and prefers it. He has learnt an elaborate, malapropic way of talking at university (and from the fairy stories he loves). And you'll love the Giant Sea Snail. Now which is the one where they end up on a pirate ship?

An amazing book.
An amazing book... an actual book our 10 yr old actually read all the way through. Loved the way it was written, full of great descriptions.

Voyages of Dr Doolittle
I was surprised at how timeless this book. is. The writing is beautiful and the story cracks along at a pace so you never get bored.I thought the idea of the narrator being a child was inspired. Read it very quickly as I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.

stories within a story
My daughter loves the story and I have read it three times to her. She never tires of it. I put this down to the fact that the Hugh lofting wanders off in his writing. In a convoluted style his narrative includes stories withing stories which really works. He manages to grasp something that children love and adults (particular publishers) would question relavance of, I imagine. If it would nt be for the fact that this is a classic story I could easily imagine large chunks of it falling under the editorial axe. I m glad none of it has!

Nothing like film/musical version of the the same title. Just so much better.
My childhood favourite, I read all the series in Japanese as a child. It's a pleasure to be able to read it again in the original language and to share it with my son. I hope all 12 volume will be available soon!

Childhood memories revisited.
I had this book as a child and loved it. Am now reading it for my son after Santa delivered it at Christmas. We both love it.

Three Stars
Wonderful stories - compelling and complex.Annoyed, however, that the book was clearly second-hand, while sold as new.

Great story, beautiful copy of the book
I'm homeschooling my daughter, so I needed to find some classic books that she could work through this year. I wanted to find something that would challenge her, so I decided to buy this unabridged version of the Voyages of Dr. Doolittle, and I'm so glad I did! The book has a very clean, crisp binding, so I know that it will hold up well among my children over the years. The pages are well-printed, clean, no issues with typing. This is a very nice copy of this book.In addition, since it had been several years, I decided to read through the book before handing it over to her. It was such a pleasure to remember how much FUN this story is to read! You follow the adventures of a young boy who sees the doctor's adventures through his own eyes, so it's perfect for a child to read. I know my daughter will love it!

great fin!
I have been a fan of Dr. Dolittle’s movies for many years! What a delight to find a book with the same sort of magic that I remember from the films. This book is sure to delete any children of tinder age that you might want to read this to.
