Wow!
All I've got to say is I am very impressed with this sharpener. After anxiously waiting for a while for it to come in the mail (regular shipping, and this is the holidays, no less), I had a huge pile of pencils to sharpen. The pencil sharpener is definitely heavy duty (the weight of it, compared to my last pitiful sharpener, is impressive), it's quick, and the pencils are clean cut and sharp. $27 (including shipping), in my opinion, is a lot to pay for a pencil sharpener, but if this one lasts as long as I hope it will, it will be worth it. Right now, I am duly impressed. Update (almost 7 years later): So I just bought another one and it is AMAZING. The reason I bought another one is because the one I bought almost 7 years ago was not working as well anymore. Still works (in fact my daughter claimed it), but it was rougher on pencils so sometimes I'd sharpen a pencil, the lead would break, I'd sharpen it again, the lead would break, etc. etc. Sometimes it would work fine, but this happened a lot. Then I couldn't figure it out if it was the pencil or the sharpener causing the problem and I did several internet searches to figure out the answer to this question (to no avail), tried different brands of pencils, and finally (after a year or two of this) decided to just try a new pencil sharpener. Works like a charm (no more breaking lead). SO.... in sum, this pencil sharpener is GREAT.... but it will only last so long, and then it might still work, but then your pencil lead will keep breaking. At that point, just buy another sharpener. This one is worth buying again.

Definitely Heavy Duty
The parameters for my pencil sharpener search were for something reliable, sturdy, and affordable without going "cheap". The sharpener will only be needed for occasional use but shouldn't be something that dies after a few years. The School Smart Sharpener definitely falls into my requirements and I must say "Heavy Duty" is a proper description. If you're looking for a whisper quiet sharpener then don't even consider this one. When sharpening a pencil the sound emitted could be compared to a piece of oak being run through a wood chipper. The grinding sounds communicate to the operator that this machine means business and will heartily handle the task at hand. The end result is a quickly sharpened pencil with pointed tips and a smooth taper. Most sharpeners labor for a time to grind a fresh, out-of-the-pack pencil to a point, but not this bad boy. It grinds away like a voracious beaver, making quick work of the task. I have no doubt this will be the last sharpener I buy/

recovered for child's overuse - shut down instead of burnt out motor - and works great again
I've always been happy with this purchase that was 4 years ago. Well, today a child decided to go on a massive colored pencil bin sharpening streak. Unbeknowst to me, they kept going until the machine was hot and then it just stopped. Great, I'm thinking - motor's burnt out and now it's just going to the trash. But I unplugged and let it cool for a while. And lo and behold, it's working just as well as it did before. So whoever engineered this, safety designed to shut down when "hot" instead of letting a child burn the motor out. So glad I bought this and would recommend for any teacher anywhere.

Compact and effective
This little sharpener is great, especially when you consider the price. I teach 8th grade. The kids are "required" to have a small pencil sharpener OR use mechanical pencils; the term "required" is mostly ignored or misinterpreted. A few years ago, I sprung for a $60 sharpener. It was much larger than this one, and it was quite loud. It lasted one day in my classroom. Some little joker decided to sharpen the eraser side of his pencil, and the metal band got cut and wound around the sharpening blades. When I smelled smoke, I swore then and there that I would never again provide a sharpener. This week I broke down. I had too many kids flat out unable (unwilling) to do any class work because their mean old teacher (me) wasn't providing them with a sharpener. I got sick of the battle. This puppy sharpens like a dream. It is quiet. Yes, the kids now feel the need to sharpen 4-5 pencils at a time, but now they have no excuse not to work. It sharpens to a beautiful point that is even and doesn't have wood left up one section of the point. I will update this review if it does NOT hold up to the class room use.

I guess most 2nd-graders love to sharpen their pencils in class which is likely ...
I bought this electric pencil sharpener after going through several cheap ones, including a battery-powered single-blade one that cost more and tended not to sharpen the pencils properly or else break the lead near the end of the sharpening. My 2nd-grade son loves to sharpen pencils, whether they need it or not, since his teacher required us to send in several boxes of pre-sharpened pencils. I guess most 2nd-graders love to sharpen their pencils in class which is likely why she made the requirement :). Anyway, he went through several mechanical pencils before we switched back to the tried & true wooden pencils, since I can buy a box of those for the price of one mechanical pencil. Plus he loses pencils everywhere - found one in the sofa after I sat down - OUCH! This sharpener is very well-built and looks to be durable for years if not decades. It uses the helix sharpening blades like the old & reliable mechanical sharpeners that mounted on a wall or desk. Gives a precise sharpened point and does not break the lead even in the unskilled hands of a 2nd-grader. Fairly quiet operation as well - I guess mine is not as loud as some other reviewers here. The shavings tray also appears reasonably sized, and I don't worry about it anyway as my son also loves to empty it into the trash. Now if he would just get a job so he can pay for these "luxuries", I'd be all set :).

8 Years Strong!
I purchased this sharpener 8 years ago. Just in the past few weeks, we've noticed the tips aren't as sharp as they used to be. It still works fine...just missing that super sharp pointy tip. I'm back here to purchase another one. The best thing about this beauty is the shavings receptacle. It's actually of a decent size and we can go for weeks without emptying. It's strong...works great. I like it as much as a human could possibly like a pencil sharpener.

SHARP, FAST, amazing...Perfect model, don't buy this if you want low-cost, poor performing unit.!! I love it!
I think this is the third pencil sharpener I have purchased in my life and it is so MUCH BETTER than my cheap 10-15.00 one I got at the big box store about 10 years ago. What is difficult is everyone seems to like their sharpener a lot...but, i selected this one based on the fact it uses slightly more current than another model I was looking at...which means it's "motor" is cranking around my pencil faster. This works so well. I get a PERFECT tip everytime and my old one was eating pencils and this one is perfect on the first try...look no further...just buy this one. It is "heavy" and sits nice on the desk or counter and resists the pushes from sharpening, just like i wanted.

It doesn't seem like something so small could ruin a day but it ...
Ok, I am a teacher and let me tell you. For me to be impressed with a pencil sharpener it's a BIG deal! It doesn't seem like something so small could ruin a day but it can and it has. When kiddos can't get their pencils sharpened and the sharpener doesn't work they whole day can be thrown off. The sharpener worked AMAZING for about 6 months. Sharpened pencils fast, and very sharp. The last few months of school it started not to work as well thats why I wanted to use it all year before reviewing. However, even though it has started to not work as well I do believe it is worth the money. I will buy another one before school starts and use my old one for a backup or colored pencils.

Saca punta perfecta en 2 segundos.
He probado otras marcas y esta obtiene buenas puntas con mucha rapidez. Fácil de usar para los niños. A diferencia de otros, no rompe las puntas y el corte es simétrico.
