Do your homework if you intend to use this item....read on
My comments may be a bit lengthly but let me caution you on buying older, possibly never before used items. After considering that I was paying Cox Cable nearly $100/year to rent a modem it made good sense to own my own. I could buy this item for less than 50% of that rental cost realizing a payback after 6 months. That being said you must do your homework. Not just any modem is compatible with Internet service provided by Cox. Visit their web site and jot down the model numbers that are compatible.Next you must set the modem up. When you contact NetGear tech support in far off India you may very well be told that the serial number you've provided represents a modem built more than a year ago and they will not provide you with technical support. I think their choice of words were, "Truly unfortunate." When you think about it you would expect a warranty to expire at some point.Perhaps at that point my luck changed when I called Cox Cable and asked, will you please help me set up my modem. Cox was accommodating but I wouldn't necessarily rely on that being the policy. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask the question of them before making the purchase. Once they send a test signal back to your modem they know that your modem is fully functional. The item works great I might add.So if you are looking to buy wisely, saving yourself some money you might do your homework first. Buy a Cox compatible modem if your provider is Cox. Ask if they will assist you technically in the setup.
