Border Town - The Very Best Of J.D.Souther

Take John David Souther out of the equation, and the Eagles have a very different history. His musical and lyrical contributions were that impressive. A terrific songwriter, Souther was there from the beginnings of country-rock, Cali soft-rock, and the whole Laurel Canyon groove. This 'best of' what should've been a much bigger solo career (commercially speaking) goes a long way in showing off his many skills -- singer, songwriter, player -- in the best light possible. I bought it based on my love of the You're Only Lonely and the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band albums, and I liked it so much that I bought another copy for a fellow Cali Rock fan friend's birthday gift. Four bright stars lighting up the desert sky and highly recommended to fans of great songwriting.

I'll keep this brief. JD Souther is an incredible songwriter from the Jackson Browne/James Taylor mold, but his desire to be a loner has kept him from greater commercial success as a performer. He just cashes the stack of checks he gets from his work for The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt and makes records every 20 years or so. This collection is terrific, but I would have preferred some other choices, in a couple of cases. This, along with Souther's new record of old songs " Natural History" make a concise collection that show his brilliance and his wonderful voice. Start with these two, and you'll eventually want everything he has recorded.

I love all of JD's solo work, but all of you that is in thebackground of 70's and 80's California rock is always mentioned by every major artist of the time. You are unfortunately a too well kept secret. This is true of so many classic gems. Thank you for your wonderful, wonderful music.

This is pretty much all the music JD Souther became famous performing from his early career to the stage of his career that he is noted for. If you want even better John David Souther musis, pick up the CDs where he looks older and more aged. I feel that age has made Souther a better performer. His minimalist musical surroundings of horn and performance is the best he has done to date.

JD is one of a few of what my husband and I call "obscure great" singer-song writers out there. Gene Clark and Jesse Winchester are two others. They all lean a little to Folk and County Rock.This CD contains most of JD's great songs Silver Blue, Faithless Love, Only Lonely and more obscure "All I Want" which is one truly great love song. Also a couple cuts with Linda; Hillman and Furay with beautiful harmonies.JD like Gene Clark and Jesse Winchester if you go thru all their music you will find some undeniably incredible gems and a few stinkers but the gems makes it all worth while.

JD Souther is a truly gifted songwriter and performer. He has largely flown under the radar but his work as writer and/or co-writer with The Eagles has been heard by millions. If you like The Eagles or just great old fashion heart felt songs without all the hype this retrospective is the CD to get.

All the songs are great and the groups J.D. assembled for these recording sessions are superb! I love hearing 'old' Linda Ronstadt singing back up and lead with a good male vocalist.

A great selection of JD Souther's best recordings. Reminds us how many well known artists were touched by JD Souther.
