We live in a high rise apartment with a “dog park” in front of the building, but we still wanted a better option for quick pee breaks for our dog, especially for stormy days or late at night. Our neighbor recommended this pad to us and it has been such a life saver. It’s the perfect size, great quality and so well made. The grass doesn’t come off and all parts are easy to clean. We add some extra pee pads right under the grass and on top of the three other layers just to keep it even cleaner. We leave the grass pad on our balcony and getting our dog to actually use it was a frustrating and long process to say the least. But two tips for anyone who might be struggling: teach your dog to “pee on command” and/or don’t take them out at night and the next morning when you know they have to pee, take them straight to the pad. A combination of these two things made the difference for us. When I took my dog out to pee and she did her little dance, I started adding my command. Right as she finishes her business, I praise and reward her as usual when training. So when I took her out to the balcony one morning instead of outside and used the command, she finally understood what I’ve been trying to get her to do in the first place, and it worked!

I can’t recommend this enough for those who live in snowy areas and struggle to get your dogs to potty outside easily. It has been a life saver and game changer! He wouldn’t potty on it at first, but I got the idea to scoop up his own blend of yellow snow into a poop bag and disperse it onto the mat. It worked like a charm and he went on it the next time instantly! I praised him so enthusiastically that he too got super excited and hopped around and has no issue at all peeing on it now. I even added a pee guard of my own out of a clear poster board because as you see in the video, he tends to gravitate towards the bars lol. Seriously though, if you are on the fence, go for it! It was SO worth it! Btw, I went with the XXL - 41”x27" for reference. Just wanted to give the lil man more room to circle before pottying on it. 😂

Totally worth it if you can pick it up on sale! I paid $22, and was absolutely worth the price. We were in the market a while for a "puppy pad" for our 25lb Shetland Sheepdog (unaltered male, trained to squat to pee). We recently moved to a third floor apartment, and the area outside he can go potty is a bit of a walk, so we wanted something to provide him with extra quick pee breaks during the day, and this has worked out perfectly for us. It did take him a few days to get it, as we put it on our balcony, and he knew that was an extension of the house and a "no potty zone." If you have trouble getting your dog to use it, just keep working and give them some time. Get them excited about their potty ritual, whatever it is, put on collars/harnesses/etc and take them to the pad. The best time to do this is in the morning when they need to go. Keep taking them to the pad, don't let them go outside other than to the pad. My dog had to both learn to go against the rules of not going potty on the balcony, and also learn that he could only pee in one spot. He eventually squatted in some snow on the balcony while I was working with him on this, and both times I picked him up and put him on the pad, but did not scold him for trying to pee on the balcony. Every time he stepped on or sniffed the pad, I praised him. After putting the "yellow snow" on the pad and letting it melt, he eventually got the idea, and when he pee'd on it the first time, I threw a party for him just like I was potty training a new puppy. After that first time, it's been smooth sailing! He's pretty happy to be able to run outside and relieve himself multiple times a day as opposed to having to gear up for limited walks. Much healthier for him to be able to empty his bladder more often as well! This definitely does not replace walking or a regular potty time outside, but I definitely recommend it for dogs who need to urinate frequently, or who have inconvenient potty spots and need an extra space to "go" sometimes. Even though we keep ours outside, we put one of those puppy training pads underneath the spacer to make emptying quicker and cleaner. Only need to be changed ever 2-3 days, so totally worth it. I wouldn't recommend this product to be used inside though, as since the urine isn't diluted into the ground, the smell can get a bit strong. Even when the entire unit is rinsed off in hot water, the smell of urine still lingers, but it's fine outside and not noticeable out there. We'll see how it does in the summer sun and heat. I don't let my dog defecate on it, because that's a mess I don't want to have to clean, and I think it's much harder for them to poop on it, as they can't roam and sniff, but great for peeing. Only negatives about the product overall is the the pan is a bit shallow, so is hard to empty without spilling (a spout, or even deeper pan would help - or you can use the puppy pad method like we do.) Also, the grass mat is pretty flimsy, but that's easily replaceable, and probably should be replaced every so often to cut down on smell anyway.

I have had this mat now for nearly a month and I have some mixed feelings about it... It arrived promptly and was everything I expected from reading previous reviews so I was very pleased. Training my dog to use it was pretty easy also, If she peed off the mat I put her nose in the pee told her "no" and then escorted her to the mat and made her sniff it. Now after maybe three times of doing that she understood and started using the mat and everytime she did we would celebrate so it encouraged her to keep doing it. After maybe two weeks (and I cleaned it daily sometimes twice if she peed a lot) she started peeing off the mat again and I couldn't wrap my head around why she would be doing that until one day I happened to catch her in the act and it came to me. The mat holds a urine scent even after you wash it with soap like instructed. She sniffed the mat (and this was shortly after it had been washed and dried outside) and then peed right beside it. So right then I attempted to smell the mat also and it had a dreadful stench of urine so it all made sense. After that I soaked it in bleach and water in an old bucket I had lying around and it smelled better and she went back to using it but still peed on the floor occasionally if she didn't like how it smelled. I'm going to keep trying the soaking in bleach and water and see if that will continue to take away the scent but to be honest its a pain in the behind to now have this issue with her on again /off again use of the mat. Oh and by continuously soaking the mat its starting to shed its fake strands. So my advice to anyone is the product works but only for a short time and then you are just going to have to keep replacing the grass like every two - three weeks. Its for short term use.

I am writing this review at 2:04 am because after days of trying to put up with this product, I really could not take it anymore and had to get up at 2:00 am to just dump it in the garbage downstairs in my apartment building. I initially fell in love with this product as a way to train my puppy to go potty outside, as he has been reluctant to do his business outdoors. This was on sale, and my puppy took to it immediately. In fact, it even helped him improve his aim, as he was getting lazy and stepping on the pad halfway before letting loose (which was a mess given his long corgi body). Upon seeing this, I immediately purchased this brand’s extra set of fake grass so I could keep them in rotation, along with simple green outdoor odor eliminator as a way to clean the fake grass. After days of rotating and cleaning, I have given up entirely. The benefits of this product are completely outweighed by the horrendous stench that radiates from this product upon even the slightest of use. I’m not sure what it is, and it isn’t a particularly gross odor, but it is an overwhelmingly powerful chemical smell that has permeated through the apartment and has given me a massive headache the last few days. No amount of odor control product, soap, or hot water will rid the product of this stench. I’ve been desperately trying to rid the apartment of the smell with candles and air freshener, and now have to have all my windows open in December just to get this horrific smell out. I suspect this will take a few days to accomplish, but just dumping the thing has already improved things a bit. I wondered if this product would be more suitable for outdoor use, where the smell may be more manageable, but also could not suggest it for that type of use. The sizing is awkward and I could hardly find appropriate pads to use to put under the grass, which meant leakage at the bottom and more cleanup. The grass also comes off easy, so even wiping the grass down while cleaning will leave you with a bunch of green plastic grass everywhere. I really gave this product a good try, and this could perhaps be my most disappointing purchase yet as a new dog owner considering how much I loved it initially, but Christ almighty I just cannot recommend that anyone purchase this product. Whatever this company uses in manufacturing the fake grass carpets needs to be entirely tossed aside for something new, because the smell it emits is just completely ruining an otherwise decent product.

In response to frustrated reviewers and to those considering buying this… (I’m not paid, I’m a regular customer like you). I know this is a long review, sorry, but these tips are very helpful based on my own experience. Thank you to other reviewers for helping me learn what and what not to do. This “grass” is NOT absorbent, look at the pictures in the ad. I intentionally wanted permeable, (after reading the reviews), so that I can use potty pads underneath for the ease of cleaning. Yeah I gotta buy the pads regularly, the cost of convenience, but I don’t mind cuz it’s easier than what other reviewers have stated they’ve gone through. Gotta pick my battles. I live in a 3 story apartment, so when I’m not feeling well or just not wanting to hike the stairs, I’ll have the dogs potty on the “grass” (and pads) on my patio. I replace the pads often and pick up the poo right away, (of course the poo will stick if not picked up right away. LOL ). Other reviewers have complained that their dogs won’t use this “grass” cuz their dogs “aren’t stupid and can’t be fooled.” Goodness, that’s a given. This “grass” IS a different feel, it IS fake, it DOES LOOK fake, and, yes, your dog WILL respond to it differently than they do to natural grass. This stuff is artificial… It takes patient training and time to TEACH your dog to use it. TRAINING: What I do to train… when I know my dog’s gotta go, I’ll stay nearby, encouraging it to WILLINGLY, not forcingingly, merely step on the “grass” by luring with treats and praise. I initially don’t expect my dog to stay on it long, much less potty on it. I follow up with praise and treats every time they do step on it. I’ll repeat this every time they gotta potty until the dog learns it pleases me to be on it. I won’t take them to natural grass, leaving them no choice but to eventually potty on the “grass.” If I have to, cuz the dog won’t potty on it, I’ll leave the potty area with the dog to mentally “reset” myself and the dog for a few minutes, then try again, repeating until successful. (POSITIVE ASSOCIATION is imperative)! Initially, my dog would potty next to it instead of on it, so I would KINDLY pick him up mid stream and put him on the “grass” while constantly praising him as he’s going. (They can’t stop once they start, so this works LOL). When he DOES go potty on it, even if I have to place him on it, I will give EXCESS praise as he’s going and then LOTS of treats after he’s finished. (I buy freeze-dried treats - most dogs cannot refuse liver! They make beef liver, chicken liver, pork liver, salmon, beef liver with pumpkin, etc. Freeze-dried is WAY healthier, it’s only one ingredient, so it does not upset my dog’s sensitive tummy - no stinky farts LOL. You cannot find these awesome treats at Walmart, you gotta go to a pet store, but it’s so worth it! I take the time to use scissors to break them into bit-size pieces - it’s one of my relaxing mindfulness activities). Anyway, NEVER EVER get mad or frustrated with your dog or it’ll associate being in trouble with being on the “grass” and then you’ll never have success! Repeat this process every time you want them to potty on the “grass.” Once they figure out what you want, it’ll eventually feel more “normal” to your dog. Even though my dogs have figured it out after a couple weeks, I still praise and treat every time cuz it’s NOT real grass, it’s not natural for them to potty on it. My dogs are still getting used to it, but they’re starting to use it more readily. This takes time! Be patient with them! Remember, dogs only wanna please you, so give them time to figure out what you want from them, then they’ll be more willing to do what you want. This applies to everything you want them to do - sit, stay, etc. (This even applies to children). After only a couple times of urinating on the “grass,” I’ll replace the pads, but I keep it outside. If I used this thing inside my home, I’d replace the pads every time cuz I HATE the smell of urine! Using pads replaces the work of cleaning the entire setup - that’s just too much work and it’s gross! I rarely have to clean/rinse the “grass” itself cuz it’s permeable and the pads take the brunt. My dogs won’t use the “grass” if the pads underneath are overused - I wouldn’t either if I had to pee on this thing. (Yes, the “grass” is very thin, it’s permeable)! I’ve not had trouble with the “grass” shedding or from an initial/brand new odor, not from this brand anyway. I have two different sizes cuz I had to figure out the right size. My boys are both 17 lbs, I will be buying another large size to give them more space. For large dogs, I recommend using 2-3 large “grass” setups placed next to each other like mine are - refer to my pix. Remember to keep the included plastic bottom under the pads. In my picks, I have one medium and one large setup. I keep a tightly closed trash bag inside a lidded trash can to manage the odor. I replace the trash bag when necessary. I use regular poo bags to pick up the poo. Again, I’m sorry for this long review, but I find it necessary to help you understand how to use this product properly. I spent a lot of time writing this review, BTW, to make sure it’s right. I hope this helps. Enjoy the convenience.

This might be the best doggie "accessory" we've bought so far! We've had the Petmaker Puppy Potty Trainer for just over a month now, and it's proven absolutely invaluable for our 11-lb miniature poodle. We bought this potty -- as opposed to the many other potty options -- because it was the only one that would fit inside of a 48" crate and still leave room for a doggie bed and water bowl. When we're out, we can leave our dog in the crate and not have to worry about making her hold it too long. We also had a problem with our dog getting up in the middle of the night and pottying on the living room carpet, and this has completely solved that issue. TRAINING For training, when she started doing her "potty dance" late at night, we'd set her inside the crate and then physically block her in with our body (instead of closing the door), so she didn't feel locked in. The first several times, she'd wander around the crate confusedly, push at us with her nose in an attempt to get out, and then finally relieve herself on the potty. Each time, we'd give her a ton of praise and petting for using her potty. Initially, she really did NOT want to use the potty and used it only because she was trapped and had no other options, so we spent a lot of time sitting in front of the crate waiting for her to go (takes patience!), but the waiting time got a teensy bit shorter each time. After two weeks of doing this at night (we take her out during the day), she started wandering over towards the potty when she needed to go but she wouldn't actually use it unless we put her inside and waited for her to go. Now it's been a month and she just uses the potty when she needs to -- with ZERO accidents in the house! USAGE / CLEANING The Petmaker potty has a layer of faux grass that sits on top of a raised plastic drainage tray, and both of those fit inside a larger black tray. The grass and the drainage tray aren't "locked in" and could slide around if you push them, but this hasn't been an issue for our 11-lb dog. We put a potty pad underneath the drainage tray, which makes clean-up MUCH easier. Our dog uses the potty multiple times per week and we haven't had any issue with smell. We change the pads every 1-2 days and then clean the whole potty in the tub with a diluted bleach solution about once a week. Our dog has shown zero interest in chewing on the grass or the pad, but she isn't much of a chewer in general. PROS - Fits inside of a 48" crate with plenty of room for a doggie bed - Big enough for an 11-lb dog to sniff around / circle around / find the "right" spot - Faux grass layer is raised and drains quickly -- does not stay wet after use - No issue with smell when using potty pads + cleaning 1x per week - No more spills or misses (compared to potty pads alone) - NO MORE ACCIDENTS IN THE HOUSE! CONS - Grass does "shed" -- we're still finding stray strands all throughout the house - Grass takes a while to dry after cleaning -- we may buy a second one for use while the first is drying - Bottom tray is shallow -- if you're not using pads, it would be very easy to spill pee everywhere when emptying

I was so excited to get this for our small dog. She wouldn't use it at first, so I bought spray to use to attract her to it. She used it great afterwards. Prior we were using washable puppy pads. I wanted her to transition to going outside so I had it set up on our covered front porch. At first I loved this product! BUT....it does begin to smell (absolutely horrible) even with regular cleaning. I used a disposable puppy pad under as others recommended. But even with those it was a MESS to clean. Urine will come out of the tray when trying to clean it. Urine drops off the grass pad when you pick it up, too. The disposable pad helped a bunch! But it was not mess free. It's truly a pain to keep! But I kept up with it and not anymore than a month to a month and a half the smell was there, regardless. Also, the smell would make my dog stink after she went to use the pad. Her paws would smell:( I decided to look for a replacement pad and couldn't find one to fit and ones I did find, cost way more than I paid to begin with. By 2 months it smelled so bad and was so embarrassing, I finally realized it was not worth it for me. I trashed it all, except the tray. I cleaned it and now use a washable puppy pad on it. My dog has learned to go outside, my porch no longer smells and I just wash the pad every few days! Much happier with this option, now! I really tried the grass pad as I didn't want to give up (plus it definitely looks nicer). But this is by far the most sanitary and easy choice. One last thing, my dog did want to chew on the grass pad. She chewed the corner off :/ So if it's always available without supervision, it may happen with yours. The grass does shed some, too.

Highly recommended for puppy training. My pups come to work with me and it helps keep them clean. I use a puppy pad under the grass surface to help with the cleaning. They took to it straight away and has been a game changer in toilet training when the weather isn't the best

Pros: When dog was puppy she used this immediately I didn't have to try to encourage it - it was instant Medium size is good but I suggest purchasing two and pushing them together because my chihuahua likes to have enough room to circle before she pees or poops There's a three layer system (grass, then bubbly plastic sifter and plastic tray) I use a pee pad at the very bottom (place on tray, the put bubble sifter over pad then grass over sifter) and it helps reduce smells and easier to keep clean Grass is a bit stinky to rinse out, but use vinegar or apple cider vinegar or a special urine removing enzyme product to help keep grass clean. It's perfect for windy balconies - the trays don't blow away or fly apart in windy conditions The dog loves this contraption Cons: If you leave it too long the grass really stinks when you go to rinse it with warm water so make sure if you are in apartment to open windows and try to put your hair in scarf so it doesn't permeate your hair. Buying replacement grass is expensive, but if you keep it relatively clean it can last a long time You're better off just buying the whole kit again cuz the grass replacement is only a few dollars cheaper If you have a large or medium sized dog I'd get 3-4 of these so they can have the room to circle. Also if you have a male dog you can buy these little fire hydrant things that can sit on the grass to encourage him to pee there. Overall I'm happy I purchased 2 of these things and I recently just bought 2 more. I'll keep buying them in the future as well.

It was really dissapointing, doesn't work as advertised, stays wet so with a puppy it is basically not useable, it already in the bin..
