A few years from now... Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga, Aquarius) notice that their village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier (Blade) arrive in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any meansnecessary to protect and maintain their remote community. The mercenaries just may havemet their match in the fed-up, resourceful denizens of little Bacurau.Special Features:-Bacurau on the Map, a making-of documentary by Kleber Mendonça Filho (60 minutes) -Deleted Scene -Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles and Sonia Braga in conversation (courtesy of Film at Lincoln Center) -Booklet essay by film critic Fabio Andrade -New interview with Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles -Mens sana in corpore sano (2011, a short film by Juliano Dornelles) -Theatrical trailer

OMG, just don't. Terrible.
One of the worst movies we have ever seen. My husband, who is from Brazil, wanted to watch it for obvious reasons. We were both regretful that we paid to give away time that we cannot get back watching a movie that was this painfully stupid. If you want to make 2 hours of movie-watching feel worse than 6 hours of standing in a queue at the DMV, go for it.

Just...*such* a good movie
This movie is simply fantastic. It touches on subjects of socioeconomic disparity, racism, colorism, etc. but keeps a certain humor and charming weirdness as well. I also love a movie with good, satisfying revenge, and Bacurau did not disappoint in that department. Overall, Bacurau was one of my favorite movies of 2019 and I really wish I could have seen it in an actual theater! Oh well.

Brilliant suspenseful film
What I liked about this movie was its ambiguous use of plot elements like psychotropic drugs and spirituality at various points, which is initially confusing. As with any film I watch, the investment of accepting this initially pays off at the cathartic climax of the events. The "Bacurauans" have a demeanor which reminds me of my own family living in villages of a similar size in Latin America, and the interesting development they exhibit as a collective is very captivating. You want to know what they are planning because it's not always clear. Overall, I think this film is worth the watch.

Thrilling and incisive
Violence and gore permeate the second half of this genre-bending Brazilian film, but it isn’t a pointless shoot-‘em-up. Instead, this is a damning critique of current and historical politics that has even better aim than a professional killer. It’s entertaining enough that you could watch it with your brain turned off, but why would you want to miss what makes this film so special?

Art film with lots of action
I struggled to get through the first 25 minutes, I'll admit. The director spent too long on the backstory with uninteresting characters and bleak cinematography.Once the body count started to add up, this action/mystery and allegory for imperialism lived up to the hype. There is a movie franchise staring a certain action hero that would be a spoiler if I mentioned it here, so I won't.Give it a chance if you like gritty and dark action movies. I enjoyed it on rental and may buy it when it goes on sale.

Needless Sexual Exposure between Couples, Poor Script, No Character Development
This is why I choose Amazon for movies, only on Amazon can the viewer warn other customers of what will be seen. Some may desire sex scenes, but many like to have the option of knowing whether this type of content will be shown or not. This movie is for a mature audience. I do not require violence, or a lot of action, but I do require that there be the development of some of the characters, some intelligence written into the script, but in this movie I found none. There are good movies that come out of Brazil, this is not one of them.

Like a Student Film with a Big(ish) Budget
Doesn’t know what kind of movie it wants to be. Touches on a litany of issues but only superficially. Like a graduate student throwing everything at the screen and seeing what sticks...not much.

One of the worst movies I've ever watched!
It is a mystery to me how this got into Obama's list of best movies of the year and I am sure it is on Amazon only because of Obama's suggestion. There was no story, the movie was extremely slow, it never defined itself, nothing made sense! In addition, I found the representation of northeastern Brazilians very denigrating. It was as though the director tried to concoct a very cheap mixture of Jorge Amado and Quentin Tarantino in an attempt to criticize American violence and white supremacy (?). And yes, there is a lot of deliberate gore. If that was the idea, I'd say the idea would have been interesting if developed intelligently. But the movie is totally nonsensical, all garbage. Mr. Obama, there are many excellent Brazilian producers and directors available and this one is not one of them.

Fortunately for film fans there are so many alternatives to Hollywood...
...and this is an excellent example of intelligent, thought provoking, engaging, cinema that offers up rich characters, ambiguous narrative elements, and just damn good entertainment.
