Great quality and variety for a great price!
My nephew loved this! He is curious little man and this was perfect for him. Not too messy, had a great variety of geodes that looked amazing under the National Geographic microscope we got him. Definitely an outside/patio activity since he has a baby sister we try to keep the noise down for but overall 10/10.. In his words "these are amazing". The adults were even entertained!

highly recommend for kids who love science and hands-on learning!
The National Geographic Break Open 10 Premium Geodes kit is an absolute hit for kids who love science and exploration! I bought this as a gift, and it exceeded all expectations. The kit comes with 10 geodes, safety goggles, and 2 display stands, making it a complete hands-on geology experience. Opening each geode is thrilling — the surprise of discovering sparkling crystals inside never gets old! The geodes vary in size and crystal type, which keeps it exciting for kids as they break each one. The included instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the goggles are a thoughtful safety addition that makes the activity worry-free. This kit is educational, fun, and encourages curiosity about geology, STEM, and natural science. It’s perfect for home experiments, science parties, or a unique gift for young explorers. Durable, well-packaged, and endlessly engaging

Pretty cool gift
Our son loved these. Super fun to crack open. Really pretty inside.

Just ok, not worth the money. No variety.
My 5 year old really enjoyed the experience of breaking these open and admiring them but I don’t think it was worth the money we spent. There wasn’t much variety and they all looked pretty similar. None were pink or purple as the pictures depicted. They were all just white/gray inside. They were a decent size, about the size of a golf ball. National Geographic always does a good job at being educational so like other kits, they included an educational pamphlet about geodes so that was nice. They aren’t too messy since we busted them outside and just brought the solid pieces in. The quality of this kit was ok but I wish there was more variety and color to the pieces. All of the pieces were included and overall my son is happy with it so I’m glad for that.

Great educational experience
Great gift for a 5 year old rock lover who says he’s going to be a geologist. Nice size Geodes are a little hard to open without the help of an adult. A little messy, but worth it!

Fun concept but results vary
We were excited to try the National Geographic Break Open Geodes set because it sounded like a great hands on science activity. The idea is fantastic and it definitely creates excitement for kids. What we liked: It comes with 10 geodes, goggles for safety, and display stands, which is a nice complete package. Breaking them open feels like a real discovery moment, and it is a good way to introduce kids to geology in a fun way. What could be better: The results really vary. Some geodes were interesting inside, but a few were smaller than expected or did not have very impressive crystals. It also requires adult supervision and the right tools to break them safely, which is something to keep in mind. For the price, I expected a little more consistency in quality. It is still a fun activity, but not every geode will be a wow moment. Overall, I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. Great concept and educational value, but the experience depends heavily on what you get inside each geode.

Great science teacher gift :)
I was looking for a great gift for the science teacher and knew the whole mug thing wasn’t going to hit the mark for someone who had been teaching for decades. I am sure her cabinets are full! - So I spent some time searching on Amazon to find an appropriate and special gift, but all I really knew about her was she had made science understandable and interesting for the teens in the small private school which was no small feat science my daughter hated science in the past. After perusing the offerings for about 30 minutes, I settled on the geodes kit from National Geographic. Here is what I thought it had going for it: 1. It was science related with a reputable name behind it. 2. It was a quick-and-easy-to-explain activity if she wanted to do it with older or younger kids or grandkids. 3. It was a hands on experience and a physical gift at the same time. 4. It was pretty. As a lady, I knew I liked pretty, sparkly rocks (usually in jewelry form though) - so I was hoping she would too. 5. It was in my price range. After giving the gift, we discovered the teacher had a special interest in rocks. So it was a good match. It is nice to feel like you purchased a gift that is well received and won’t be collecting dust. She has already made plans to open some of the geodes during a class this year. Thus far it is a raging success. During my research, I discovered that scoring an equator around circumference and using a hammer/chisel to open produced a better outcome than just using a hammer. The hammer alone seemed to produce smaller sections and some crumbled. I would also suggest using some type of holding mechanism, if possible, like a vice with foam padding around the geode. I noticed that many of the people in the videos were afraid to hold it in place while they were striking it to open. Once they are opened in class I will update the review with any feedback I get. Update: Everyone loved it and the teacher made a point of mentioning how much it meant to get a special and thoughtful gift.

Love it
Great set but be warned, these are quite hard to open. With the regular hammer, I probably had to hit it for a good 20min! I guess it attests to their authenticity

Fun to Crack Open, Just Don’t Expect Rainbow-Dream 🪨
This geode kit comes with the “huge” rock itself, a zip bag with some dust😅, and a full-color booklet 📦. Fair warning: it’s covered in dirt, so open it over tiles or take it outside unless you want sand everywhere 🤪. Give it a quick rinse and brush before cracking—way easier than trying to clean the insides later. I used a power tool and got a clean split; inside was a big cavity of pure white crystals🤍. Checked other reviews and yep, pretty much everyone gets white ones, so don’t hold your breath for the purple or blue beauties in the booklet 🥲. Still, the moment it cracks open is pure magic for kids (and adults). The instructions are smart—wrap it in a sock or cloth first so shards don’t fly🥸. Not a treasure haul, but the hands-on “wow” factor is totally worth it. Kids will love it—recommended 👍.

Kam super an
