Tennessee River Adventure
I am the father of 9 trying to read ahead of them to keep the trash out of their heads. Wish me well.Decent story. A family pioneering down a river is fun and a nice change from heading west in a wagon like most of these books.Notes: there is some killing and life or death situations. For that I will be limiting it to 12yo+, but it's target writing level is probably closer to 10.Redacted second half of page 45, all of 46 and the first half of 47 due to references to Appalachian superstitions. Not interested in my kids learning every dumb superstition that someone ever came up with. It just isn't needed though I certainly realize that is a concern specific to me and my family.

Seven-year-old grandson couldn't put this down
Thank you for your prompt shipment of this item. My grandson completed this book in one day, walking around the house with his nose in the book. I was in hopes that it would arrive during the week that he was staying with us. William O. Steele is his new favorite author, having discovered him first in "Daniel Boone". Massbookstore mailed it immediately.

I learned that I’m glad I have never had to travel by flatboat over the rapids!
Kept my 8 year old son intrigued the whole time. Exciting adventure book.

Come and take this journey with me
This is a very well-written book. The descriptions give the reader a visual experience of the difficulty of the journey. Each chapter ends on a suspenseful note that invites the reader to anticipate the next chapter.

The plot is terribly unrealistic (for example
I got this book from the library intending to have my 8 year old read it, but I read it first and will not encourage her to ever read it. The plot is terribly unrealistic. But my biggest concern was the racist way it deals with Native Americans. At one point the main character a 9 year old boy shoots an 'Indian' and feels as much pride and remorse as if he had shot a deer or a wolf. The characters are strongly painted in a white hat (The pioneers) black hat (the natives) description which is typical of the time the book was written but not a attitude I ever want my children to develop.

Really enjoy this author and this book - but accuracy?
Confused about the accuracy of this book. they travel the tennessee river and everything seems accurate except their destination. French Salt Lick was Nashville and TN River doesn't go through Nashville. The Cumberland does...
