As others have already pointed out, with a lineup like this how can this NOT be a great recording? Chick Corea is at his best here - I just love him on the Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano. And I will buy anything with Joe Farrell on it; he was simply the best flute/sax player in the world. I really like Eddie Gomez here, and Steve Gadd's drumming is so fluid tying it all together. The only thing I've never liked about this album is the goofy cover picture; I wish instead they had a decent picture of these four musical giants together. As far as I know this is the only recording they ever made together, and it deserves a great visual to match the great audio. It's as good now on CD as it was on vinyl 30 years ago.

One of the best jazz albums made. I loaned my copy to a friend some time ago and kind of forgot about it until my daughter mentioned the “smurf” album I used to play all of the time. I was lucky to find it here on Amazon, and happy to have it back in my collection.

Friends was a pivotal change for me when I was studying drums with my teacher, he turned me on to many different forms of jazz and Latin, cappuccino is one of my favorites,

Excellent music. No one can imitate the sound of Eddie Gomez, Joe Farrell's flute is spiritual, Gadd is in the league of De Johnette, and Chick is magnificent as always. Music to be heard with the one you love.

What's not to love about Chick Corea?

This combination is explosive with Chick's accessible playfulness and Joe Farrell's exploration of edginess they complement each other well. Eddie Gomez and the incomparable Steve Gadd round out this legendary recording with their own incredible solos and support. I recommend this for any jazz collection, without qualification.

.This is classic performances, showing Chick deftness to steer from in this point and time Return to Forever to an aucoustic ensemble on this recording.Oh? Steve Gaddzooks tm. Gadd performance is consistent for thr 70's as one or two of the Jazz, Rock, POP standard bears on drums.

Eddie Gomez noch elastischer als auf Vinyl damals. Alles sehr transparent und klar. Ein Klassiker, für viele bestimmt zu gefällig, aber das macht es gerade aus.

Trotz des "bescheuerten" Covers: dies ist eine sehr gute "kammermusikalische" Jazz-Scheibe, die gewiß auch vielen nicht Corea-Fans gefallen wird. Ich kann meinem Vorredner nur zustimmen. Gehört in meine Augen zu den besten Corea-Platten.

I had some doubt in years gone by about Chick Corea, but having bought this and "Now he sings, now he sobs" as well as "Mad Hatter" I'm now certain I've been missing out on a great musician for the last 50 years.This album which features Corea on Steinway Grand Piano and a Fender Rhodes electric Piano, is superb in many ways. The original compositions are pretty catchy, the rest of the band are stella: Joe Farrell on Reeds and Flute, Eddie Gomez on bass and Steve Gadd on drums (credited as percussion). The opening track "The One Step" starts out with a great electric Piano riff and never lets up. If I had one slight criticism it would be the similarity in feel between "Sicily" and "Samba Song". But is too much of a good thing bad?!For me "Samba Song" is the highlight of the album. As the title of the track implies this is a samba, and a really amazing one. For fans of Steve Gadd's drumming, this may be reason enough to buy the album alone. The drive, energy and inspirational energy from all 4 musicians is superb. I can't really put it into words!I found out today that this album won a grammy for best Jazz instrumental album (or similarly titled award) in the late 70s, and I'm not surprised at all. What a band, what an album..

シシリーが好きで何十年も聴いている。10代の頃はガッドの4ビートに違和感があったが今は気にならない。ジャケはオリジナルな動物の方が良かった。

このアルバムの素晴らしいのは、難解な手法によらず、なおかつ音楽的にもスキル的にも高いレベルでひとつのコンセプトアルバムとして完成しているにもかかわらず、非常に聴きやすいアルバムになっている、というところ。ただ耳障りがいいということではなくて。だからジャズを普段あまり聴かない人でも抵抗なく楽しむことが出来るし、もちろんジャズを聴き込んだ人にもディテイルを聴きこめば聴きこむほど彼らのスキルの高さに驚嘆することが出来る。演奏している人間も楽しんで演奏し、なおかつ洗練という意味においてジャズのひとつの方向性を示している。もちろん、ここにジャズのすべてがある、とは言わないけど。

注文した「フレンズ」が昨日届きました。聞くのは今日が２回目ですが、いいですねぇ。元々評価の高い作品でしたので、まずハズレはないことを確信しておりましたが、期待以上でした。そして購入価格が１千円そこそこというのが、これまた嬉しい。個人的にはガッドのドラミングが特に気にいってます。迷わず買うべし。

amazonの検索で”B00008K760”を探すと試聴できるようだ。他の方も書いているが、このアルバムでのチックはアコースティックピアノでは無い。Fender Rhodesという、れっきとしたエレクトリックピアノだ。このピアノの音色は、特にライブで聞くと美しいのだが、今はほとんど聴くことができない。さて、現代において、この楽器構成が耳になじむかと言えば、なかなか難しいのでは無いだろうか？。この時代と並行して、シンセが急速な発達を遂げ、誰もがシンセやボコーダーの音を模索して、新しい音楽性を築いていった。その過渡期にRhodesピアノでアコースティック風のジャズバンドを試みたのだと思う。チック崇拝者にとっては気持ちの良い音楽かも知れないが、２０年近く経過した現時点で番人受けする音楽では無い。良い作品であることは間違い無いが、試聴した上で、気に入った場合に購入することをお奨めする。特に、ジャズ入門者には、もっと先に聴いておくべきアルバムが多く存在する。いずれにしても、素晴らしい時代であった。

1978年作品。同年の作品には『The Mad Hatter』、『An Evening with Herbie Hancock』、『Secret Agent』などがある。この年はリターン・トゥ・フォーエバーの最後のライヴ盤が出た年でもあって、チックがエレクトリックの分野で次のステップに進む年だったと言えるだろう。このアルバムでの特にエレピのフレージングというのが後のアコースティック・ピアノにも色濃い影を落としているのがよく解る。言ってみればチックはエレクトリックで実践したフレージングをほぼそのままアコースティック・ピアノにも使ったのだ。そこでチックの世界は完成を見る。『ワルツ・フォー・デビー』をもじったような2の『ワルツ・フォー・デイブ』はデイブ・ブリューベックに捧げられている。可愛らしいアルバム・ジャケットはチックのコンセプトをMichael Manoogianがデザインしたものだ。このアルバムでは特にジョー・ファレルが素晴らしい。明るく優しい世界だ。愛聴盤です。
