I just got it today so my opinion could change. If it does I'll update this review. First off have to just say this is a fantastic knife. I'm not a big fan of china made products, but this is an exception. The quailty of workmanship is top notch. I wouldn't consider this a machete. The blade is 10" long and 3/16" thick which doesn't equal machete. I would call this a camp/survival knife for sure. The steel used is comparable to 1065 to 1070 medium carbon steel, which is typically used to make combat swords. What does that mean? It means its softer and more flexible than steels typically used for knives, but thats ok with me. It makes it more flexible and less prone to chipping compared to say a typical 1095 steel. Its easier to sharpen, but wont hold an edge like a harder steel. It comes out of the box with a sharp semi polished convex edge, which is excellent in my opinion. I usually dont rate knives base on their factory sharpness. I don't care about it because I always re-profile them and put a convex edge on anyway. This one come from the factory already perfect! It's not quite as sharp as I like, but fantastic for a factory edge. The sheath is excellent. I don't know what else to say. The only thing I would change is to add a snap to the belt loop. Other than that its perfect. The only possible weak point I can see is the handle. Only time will tell how it holds up, but its comfortable and you can get a really good grip on it. Im just concerned the plastic may break over time. Maybe it wont. If it does im sure Kershaw will replace it without any problems. For the price you can't really beat it. I chose this knife over a Becker BK-9, and I love Beckers. Review: GREAT BUY - BOTH KNIFE AND SHEATH - Of the variety of large knives, machetes and so forth, this is by far one of the best knife & sheath combinations. The price makes it an even better deal. It doesn't really matter to me whether it is a true Kukri a Bolo or something else. What matters is that it works. There are several larger knives I have been looking at but now question whether I would use them enough to make the purchase. This past year I bought a Kukri style knife, 'U.S.Army Strong" Tactical Kukri. It was not very good. Just a heavy piece of metal at a low price. It did put me on a trail to find something better. As a result I've purchased a variety of chopping blades. For the most part, I've moved toward the re-curved style. They are not as easy to sharpen as a straight edge but they work better for me. I love the Camp 10. It is the right size, it cuts really well, the handle and grip are well above average. You can hack w/ it, baton it and even make a few curls for a fire. It doesn't substitute for a Mora or other light bushcraft knife. Its a little big for dressing a squirrel or cleaning fish. It is what it is - a camp knife. At this length and design, I would also have trouble calling it a Kurkr or a Machete. Only time will tell how well it holds up. Since I really like it, I will use it. The sheath is the best I've found in my journey for a really good camp knife. The Schrade set-up is a close second It is a hard shell w/ very functional webbing straps. It can be carried in a number of ways and has lashing slots and holes. It does not have MOLLE webbing. It could be very easily modified to use attachments. I've made an extension to the belt loop attachment to drop the handle below my waist and allow it to swing more along w/ a loop of cord around the handle and sheath strap to pull the handle closer to the body. Given the price of under $35 I can't complaint. In my search, I've stayed away from the really long blades. For me they are beyond my need, cumbersome and more weight. I have grass cutting machetes which I never use. Of the others I've picked up, the Schrade are really good. The SOG is o.k. but I've found that saw-backs are of of limited value and tend to cut their sheaths. The Marbles hookbill axe and the Silky hookbill are also excellent. If you buy a Marbles - be sure to get the sheath. Since its multi-functional, I plan to take Marbles w/ me whenever I pack out. In fact, its good to just have in the truck. The Silky is in a price by itself, both in price and quality. It is a quality lifetime tool. The Cold Steel is a really good working tool. Budget wise it is hard to beat. The down side is - it comes w/ a raw grind which has to be finished. The Kershaw, Marbles and Silky are fun to use. All are really good pruning, trimming and chopping tools. I've found the re-curve Kukri style and the hookbills to be my favorite chopping tools. A YouTuber that reviews blades reviewed this machete and by the end it had a big crack .** A: Well, here's the thing... You have another case of trying to make one tool do it all. There are always trade offs. It is a long and thin knife the shape of a machete. Machetes are typically made of thin, underhardened or lower carbon alloys that are very flexible and ductile, but not hold a keen edge and are more likely to roll than chip or break. Knives, with the exception of fillet or many kitchen knives, are made of thicker, harder alloys designed to keep their shape better and hold an edge longer. They tend to be higher in either carbon content or hardness, or both. This tool is a long thin knife more than a machete, as it has a higher carbon content and holds an edge significantly better than most of my machetes. It's not much thicker, but it is, and the weight and feel in hand shows. It is also far stiffer than most of my machetes. It is also quite comfortable in hand, but I'm not sure yet about durability of the handle - only time will tell. Since it holds a better edge, it serves my purposes more fully, in spite of being more brittle, for accompanying my pruning shears for clearing Himalayan blackberry bushes, a pest here in the Pacific Northwest. I use a Cold Steel machete or Tramontina in the tropics. I use my axes and hatches, or larger Ontario sp's or my Becker bk9 on stiffer, thicker, woodier materials. A thin, higher carbon hard tool steel tempered like this, especially when it has lots of contaminants as "dirty" Chinese usually does, will be far more prone to breakage with lateral forces. I have found mine to not chip as much as roll, so they've done a fairly good job on these. Overall, knowing what I was getting into, I'm fairly satisfied with these tools (10 and 18 inch). **Q: where is this made?** A: This knife is made in China from Chinese 65Mn, high carbon, non-stainless steel. **Q: Does it come very sharp or does it need to be sharpened?** A: It come sharp. Keep in mind this type of machete is for heavy duty chopping and should not have an edge so sharp that you can shave with it, It would only dull quickly if it did. **Q: Does the loose-fitting sheath cause dulling of the edge since it rattles?** A: I can't imagine a plastic sheath hurting a hardened steel edge. If it does then the blade is not heat treated properly. Still holding an edge, and still hasn't broke. I bought this on sale for $35. Man what a deal!! First day out there were some bushes and briers out on the hunting trail we use. Smashed through all that mess with little to no resistance. Then we got curious. Could it cut a limb; four sacks later, yes it can. Checked the edge, still sharp. Hmmm what about that little sapling tree? Wack, wack, wack, wack, wack; yup, sure did. At this point the blade was a little dull, pulled out an edge sharpener, ran it across the edge two times on both sides and it was back to popping hairs off my arm. We laughed about how awesome this thing was and wondered; but can it cut an oak tree down? We set out on finding the biggest dead oak we could find. After an hour or so we found a massive oak that had fallen into another tree; realizing, we need to cut this into pieces before it splits and potentially gets someone killed. About six hours later, we had this massive oak tree in eight pieces. When I say massive, it was three foot thick. There was no edge deformation, the handle is still solid, it only wore off a little of the black coating. Three years later, it's still being swung into everything between twigs to tree trunks. Skinned a couple of deers, whacked a few fish heads off. When you first pick up this knife, there's an immediate cave man instinct that kick into overdrive, "I must go wack". Ergonomically, this blade was designed to wack. When you walk out into a forest full of trees, there's this urge to want to start cutting every tree down. But I refrain to only smashing trees that have already passed away. I'd feel terrible cutting down momma and baby tree in the prime of their youth. But dead grandpa tree, you getting whacked to pieces buddy, the we gonna roast some wines over your dead body. Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention the sheath. The sheath is great and the blade doesn't get snagged. Only down side is that the nylon strap has somehow shrunk through the years; guess Kershaw knew that this blade will be out of its sheath more than it's in it. All in all I'm very pleased with the camp 10.
