A realistic approach to keeping owls
'Understanding Owls' is an introduction to keeping, breeding and training owls. It is clearly of use to those with a mind to keeping their own owls but is also worth a look from anyone with even a passing interest in the birds. The tone can be downbeat at times, but I do not think that this in any way represents a lack of interest in the subject matter by the author, as suggested in one or two other reviews. In fact, I think such a pointed criticism is entirely unfair. The author is clearly a realist and loves the birds she works with, and to protect them from would-be rearers who have given insufficient thought to the responsibility of rearing birds of prey, she makes the down-side clear. In no way does this mean that she doesn't like the birds; she is making sure that they are looked after by the right people. If you are not looking to rear your own owl, 'Understanding Owls' is still interesting to thumb through, if only for the beautiful full-page colour photographs. However, if you are looking for a book with more general information about the natural history of owls, there are more suitable books out there. 'Owls: Their natural and unnatural history' by John Sparks and Tony Soper is a fascinating read, although fairly old now and lacking in colour photos.

Better than expected!
I have to say I was quite skeptical ordering from Brit Books, but I really wanted this book and they had it for a good price. I am so happy with this purchase! It arrived 4 days ahead of its earliest estimated delivery date, and it's in amazing condition!

testo molto interessante, tratta in maniera molto chiara ed abbastanza approfondita i vari argomenti, avendo come trattato di riferimento l'arte de la cetreria di Felix Rodriguez da la Fuente ovviamente per quanto concerne la caccia con rapaci diurni, prezzo molto conveniente ed invio rapido.

Only a basic introduction
This book is written for the completely uneducated reader. It provides basic information on taxonomy, natural history, housing ideas/plans, and an overview of training. In depth information is absent. It is obvious that the author has extensive experience with owls, but much is missing. If you are considering purchasing this book and are a biologist, or an experienced raptor keeper or trainer, there is nothing to be learned here. Areas that should have been included are specific feeding details (owls can be very sensitive to food types, food preparation and casting types/quantities, for example). There are husbandry and health issues particular to owls, as well as training and flying equipment and techniques. Training an owl in falconry is somewhat similar to training a hawk, but mostly very, very different. This point is not discussed in any useful manner which is a true disservice to owls, which are almost universally compared in disdain to hawks.
