The book begins with my own health journey through mitochondrial fatigue and how I overcame it with the functional medicine approach to diagnosis and treatment. The first two chapters discuss the basic science of the mitochondria and their involvement in cell defense, energy production, aging, and cancer. The following chapters deals with the avoidance of chemicals, pesticides, and toxins that poison the mitochondria, food to nourish them, supplements, and hormetic lifestyle changes. The next chapter details the functional medicine approach to patient's symptoms using lab testing to arrive at the diagnosis and treatment. The book concludes with a summary of actionable items that the reader can do at home. If you suffer from chronic fatigue, excess fat that you can't lose, brain fog, or any number of symptoms, the answer might just lie deep in your cell called mitochondria. They are responsible to make energy called ATP for the cell to function. If they sense danger to the cell and to themselves, they will shut down ATP production and go into cell defense mode, resulting in generalized dysfunction of the most active cells like the muscles and brain. You can now reverse this process using a validated method by the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Chang has personally gone through a health journey of mitochondrial dysfunction and fatigue and by applying the methods in the book, he has fully recovered. Review: Energy is Everything! And Energy begins in the Mitochondria. - Energy is Everything! Great primer on the importance of mitochondrial health. This is certainly more of a primer than a text book, and provided a working understand of the interaction between mitochondria, poor health, and disease. I thoroughly recommend it! Two additional notes- 1) the writer is physician and not a novelist, don't get after him for the layout. 2) I believe believe pages 144 and 145 should be swapped. These technical notes in no way reduced the quality of the content. Still 5 stars all the way! Review: A must read - If you're health is important to you. This is a must read.

useful information
Valuable personal information was shared which was relatable. The technical explanations could have been followed with a short layman terms for clarity a bit more.

Amazingly helpful
This book helped me more than I could ever imagine. I suffer from pretty extreme fatigue (and I'm only 27!) and know going to a functional medicine doctor is my best bet, but if you can't afford to go to one, I highly highly recommend this book. Even if you can, I would still read this book. It is super well written, a great reference, and Dr. Chang really knows what he is talking about. His approach is backed by science and it is clear that he continually does research and is up to date on his knowledge. I am currently using this book as a blueprint and have been following his advice super strictly for about a month and have already noticed improvements! If you have fatigue, I highly recommend that you buy this book and follow this advice and you're bound to notice improvement as well!

The Core Elements of a Functional Medicine Approach to health
The author explains in relatively brief terms the core causes and remedies for dysfunctional mitochondria. I like his straightforward approach and physiological explanations of the root causes of most health concerns. Many of these I had heard of but appreciated the concise descriptions and ways he connected them to the mitochondrial processes critical to maintaining health. Good descriptions for tackling the restoration of the mitochondria and a few case studies, besides his own journey. Overall, I highly recommend this book for individuals looking to understand why they feel like crap and how to begin healing.

Very interesting topic and excellent information
The author of this book is writing from self-experience. I enjoy the way the author has taken a very complex study and made it manageable. I usually don't read books of this nature but in fact I found it very usual and have picked up some practices that I will implement into my lifestyle. Dr Chang takes you through the following: • Structure & Function • Prevention • Nutrition • Supplements • Lifestyle • Functional Medicine (what it is and how to implement) • MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASES Functional Medicine is a holistic approach to healing. Focusing on diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes. I think this is a key practice that everybody should implement into their lifestyle to ensure a healthy happy life.

Must read for those seeking or practicing integrative medicine
As the licensed acupuncturist Dr Chang mentioned in his book, I was honored to be a part of Dr Chang’s journey to seek a non-drug solution to his health challenge. Dr Chang did an incredible job in an attempt to simplify an extremely complex subject for the lay audience. On the other hand, in my opinion, the breadth and depth of this book can also qualify to be a textbook for medical students. I learned a lot about this fascinating and critical subject myself also from reading Dr Chang’s book. Mitochondrial dysfunction is indeed at the core as the fundamental basis for most of today’s common chronic diseases. I especially enjoyed learning about how the functional medicine tests help identify the root causes and imbalances in the various systems of the body. That is why I like to support my clients with the integrative medicine approach by collaborating with functional medicine practitioners like Dr Chang because the functional medicine tests provide concrete quantitative evidence that best compliment our qualitative diagnostic methods on the energetic levels in our Chinese medicine practice. They serve as solid baseline and good objective measurements for evaluating our clients’ progress during the treatment process. I highly recommend this book for anyone who are seeking solutions to their health challenges with integrative medicine.

Good basic book on the subject
The book is written for the layperson, brief on the subject. Mention of diets not in detail, suggestion for supplements, need for sleep, etc., However, the editor (s) should check the sequence paragraph of a certain topic in the book, e.g. Age-related Hearing loss page 143 to page 147. Not sure how this was missed in the printed book. But it is the incorrect sequence in kindle.

A must read if you are suffering physically!
This book is just what we need. It is a must read. The information in this book explains the source of a lot of our physical (and mental) suffering. The medical system focuses on, and treats symptoms instead of focusing on root causes. This book helps to explain a root contributing factor to many of the ailments we deal with today. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 1.5 years ago. I have read extensive information on treating this naturally. This is the first piece of information that I have found that clearly explains what is going on in my body, and better yet, what to do about it. I have already started the intermittent fasting and I feel fabulous. I love knowing 'why' and 'what to do about it' and this book clearly and concisely accomplishes both.

Everything you need to know about protecting your mitochondria.
In this book, as its title implies, Dr. Chang presents an extremely comprehensive overview of both mitochondrial function amd dysfunction; comprising details of harmful lifestyle choices and appropriate interventions and measures that can be employed everyday by everybody to promote better health. Through the lens of the functional medicine approach to the many problems which have mitochondrial dysfunction as their cause, Michael Chang presents a catalogue of the various strategies at the cutting-edge of our scientific knowledge which can be successfully applied to return us to good health. This is a tour-de-force and one-of-its-kind examination of how symptom, cause and remedy can all be linked centering around the understanding of mitochondria.

I don't know if it's a good book
I went to to section on Red Light Therapy and read that he adds his collagen supplemento to his morning coffee. That would be the first error, the heat of his morning coffee. The rest just seems like a collection of everything I've ever read.
