"Missing tiger, broken snake": A Western unlike any other
This movie will rub your soft, modern sensibilities raw until you develop calluses. It isn't politically correct. What happens to the people in the story isn't safe, civilized, or respectful. Many people are killed. A woman is abducted and nearly raped, several times. It's as harsh and unforgiving as the landscape it plays out on.But it's also full of wry humor, displays of hidden strength, and the sharing of secrets about the things that people do to survive. When the going gets tough, and I mean shot-all-to-hell-and-back tough, do you give up were it counts -- inside -- or do you keep on going, no matter what? The people in this story do what must be done, without self-justification or explanation. It's the classic Western motif of silent, long-suffering survival -- with a twist. The chemistry between the two lead characters is quite wonderful. They are not portrayed as Beautiful People. They are plain on the outside, the dialog is spare and barren, like the land, and the difficulties between them are not completely resolved in the end. This lets you appreciate their inner qualities, which are slowly revealed throughout the movie. You come to truly admire them for their grit, courage and humor. If you are sensitive to violence and adversity, especially to men mistreating defenseless women, then you should give this one a pass. This movie will be enjoyed by those who accept that life can be hard and unfair, that outward appearances mean nothing, and that civilization is just a thin veneer on top of the human condition. If you can laugh at the absurdities of life, and are interested in what it means to earn the true respect of others by persevering in the face of adversity, then this one's right up your alley. And a final note about the ending. It's perfect.

a truely GOOD western... gorgeous scenery, solid acting, original story, period correct, classic score, nothing over the top
I read the review quotes on the cover-art of this DVD and laughed... they were either bland or outlandish... even comparing it to "Unforgiven".The second that the movie ended, I literally said "wow". And immdiately it is obvious, the dialogue, acting, seriousness, tone, musical score, scenery, realism, originality and more, were ON-PAR, if not above almost any western I can think of... even, (gasp) Unforgiven.I was drawn in to the professionalism of the production... atention to every detail was given, cinematography and locations shot were amazingly beautiful yet harsly barren, the characters were impeckable, the sincerety, drama, details, everything. This movie really brings home the true dangers of those lawless times. Everything in this movie is not only believable, but draws you in, and puts you right there with the characters. This is REALISM at it's best.I applaud the producers and directors for making a modern day western that isn't a hollywood shootem'up, or re-hash of a half-popular old western. This movie will have your heart pounding, leave your jaw dropped, and put tears in your eyes. There is suspense and surprises all along the way. Well done, casual pace, but not a single boring moment. THIS is how I envision the wild west must have really been like. This should be a western everyone should see.. I know you will be impressed... too bad this didn't have a marketing budget for the big screen... then again, I know what big money does to westerns, so I'm glad the production was left alone. It's AWSOME! A++++

GOOD FOR NOTHING
It's definitely a different kind of western. I didn't know either of the two leading characters, but the supporting cast is really great. I especially liked the Irish doctor who remarked, "I'm in the middle of me supper." Hahahaha. Not a film for everyone, especially young kids, but it is entertaining for adults. I've watched it several times now, and I enjoy it more now than I did at first. I thought it was a senseless movie the first time I saw it, as I had trouble understanding the dialog. But then I watched it with subtitles, and it was better for me then. I think most people will not like this film and find it sort of crass. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Unusual Western
Different and a little strange, but not at all a bad movie. The outlaw who murdered the young ladies protectors and stole her away for his selfish needs that he never received . Well in the end he becomes her protector and sees her way home to family due to his change of heart. Worth at least one viewing of the movie, that I did view two or three times.

Fun little western worth adding to your collection.
Great little western made by a visual effects artist who worked on the 2005 iteration of King Kong and others. Definitely worth having if you're a huge fan of westerns like I am, apparently they shot this movie in New Zealand and the locations look great which is a very important part of movies in this genre. I would have given 5 stars if the DVD came with CC options.

The need to survive is a powerful instinct.
In this western, a young woman is kidnapped by a savage bandit. He tries to have his way with her, but he is stricken by impotence. Holding on to his hostage, he desperately tries to find a cure for his condition. Then, they become a target for a posse who believes that the young woman was in cohorts with him and intends to kill them both. In order to survive, they must join their wits together Their efforts of survival create a gritty and entertaining movie.

Irreverent Western Offers Something Different
Laconic and mean spirited outlaw(Cohen Holloway)guns down the protectors of newly arrived and prim english lady(Inge Rademeyer whose english accent is a little hard to place but seems east of the english channel) and kidnaps her for the simple reason of wanting as he puts it so delicately "a poke".After being unable to fulfil his side of the bargain he seeks help for his lack of vitality and starts shooting people while attracting a rather reluctant posse.New Zealand western got some good reviews stateside and a limited theatrical release and it is certainly different.Rademeyer(one of the producers) is adequate as the damsel in distress and Holloway makes Eastwood's Man With No Name seem a veritable chatterbox. However it is pretty slight and the comic moments while being very low key and on the whole amusing sit uncomfortably against the apparent amorality of the lead character. The sequence with the tracker however is pretty funny.Lush score by the New zealand Symphony Orchestra and lush scenery even if the long shots are a little inconsistent in quality. An interesting if somewhat minor diversion from the norm.

A western ,but a bit different.
I thought the acting was quite good, ditto for the script and cinematagrophy.4 stars rather than 5 ,only because Unforgiven is a 5,but that's just me.I recommend this movie if you like westerns with a good plot.
