Q: If I only have a small area to steam how many times can I use the same disc? Is it supposed to be changed every time?

In my experience, they are a one time use. They could, possibly, maybe, be reused but the time and effort isn't worth it. I myself put a drop or two of essential oils into the water tank. It has the same effect and you can choose your favorite sent. That said, I am not sure what, if any downside it will have on the machine. None so far, 1+years.
