The Great Delusion
“Die – The Great Game” collects issues #11-15 of this excellent fantasy/horror series.I am no great fan of heroic fantasy – I read it all when I was a teenager, because you could back then – but I grew out of it when it became an industry and realised that ‘good writing’ was more interesting than subject matter. So, when Peter F Hamilton or Richard Morgan write fantasy stories, I read them because they are superb writers, and Kieron Gillen writes superb comics, so I am reading this series.Due to Covid disruption affecting my local library, volume 2 of this book was a year late arriving, and volume 3 was waiting on the shelf when it did.I could remember little of the first volume, and found volume 2 a bit heavy going, but reading this one so quickly after the 2nd, I was able to just drive straight through without having to try and remember what was going on, and the quality of writing is definitely showing through. The first volume was scene-setting, the second, character developing, and now the plot is beginning to be revealed here, and it is going off in an unexpected direction, though I am reminded of Mr Gillen’s “Journey into Mystery” here; not for any direct copying, but just the feel and for HG Wells here reminding me of Tony Wilson in JM.As I wrote for the previous volume – “Mr Gillen is a superb writer of mainstream comic-books, where, like the British Vertigo writers of old, he looks at their traditional stories from an Un-American angle. Here he is doing the same sort of thing, though here he is bringing his knowledge of the background of game-design/production (he was a journalist specialising in that field) as well as bringing-in the “real-world” that real people inhabit, through that self-examination of life that ‘mature’ people have to go through to reach maturity.”
