Doesn't Hurt to Ask: Using the Power of Questions to Communicate, Connect, and Persuade
L**A
“Persuasion is not about winning an argument -
it’s about effectively and efficiently advocating for what you believe to be true.“Asking proper questions is the key to author, Trey Gowdy’s, “Doesn’t hurt to ask” communication program; fashioned from his years of experience as a prosecutor and Congressman. He also makes some common sense, profound, IMHO, statements. One of my favorites: “The world would be a quieter, less hostile place if we replace the desire to shout with the desire to be heard...” Somebody should cross stitch samplers of that and give it to EVERY MEMBER of the House & Senate as well as make mask cloth out of it. That way, they could see it when pontificating, rather than working, all the live long day, in D. C.Chapters on persuasion are brilliant as is the use of an actual court case, one that had/has such a profound effect on Gowdey, heart, mind and soul. This allows the reader to understand the rationale behind decisions, to be part of the process and to think and FEEL the impact of how these effect others.Chapter 13 is a fascinating little visit with what Gowdy calls “Thanksgiving Conversations”. He discusses hyperbole, absurdity and how to repackage a conversation back to the originator that gives the phrase: “make them eat their words” a whole new and fresh enjoyment. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book and will enhance your personal skills for years to come! Many more examples exist and lots are from his experiences while serving in Congress. There are some fresh insights and I suspect other reviewers will focus on these so I chose not to even tho’ they were quite jaw dropping. Honestly, some of the truly arbitrary, self serving examples...🙄 Altho’ Gowdy is a faith based, conservative guy, he has taken an unbiased, (as is possible), approach to events detailed in this book.Extremely well written, professionally published and thoroughly engaging to read📚

I could not put it down.
Well written, concise, and great moments of humor. If you have ever watched or listened to Trey, this book is pure Trey Gowdy. His personality and integrity shine through on every page. I always said he is the one person I would never want to debate, but after reading his book, I may just be ready.

Fantastic Book!! Trey is funny.
Who knew Trey was funny. I have both hard copy and audio version. I would encourage you to get audible version or both if you can. Trey had me laughing and learning. Great sharing and ideas for those who are required to talk to other humans . Ideas will help lessen arguments and open others to consider other perspectives.

Good reading
I’ve always liked Trey Gowdy’s style. He has true American values, and is a say it like it is kind of man. I respect him very much for that. The book is wonderful so far. It shows the softer side from what I have read so far. He is a remarkable, highly intelligent man. Read this book!!!!!! Thank you Trey Gowdy for being up front and saying what is....

Trey, we will miss you so much
I have just finished my first read of this book. My now next expectation is my opportunity to read it again and actually attempt to understand what Trey is telling me. Why don't we have more representatives, like you, for us in Congress?

We Can Be Better
I can’t imagine a better guide for any legislature than the rules of engagement found in this book. Follow these steps and the term “politician” will never be uttered again. It should never be about politics. It should always be about answers to questions.

Entertainment or Legal advice
I have seen T. G. on multiple news services, mostly political, and have always been better informed by it.I am a fan of Trey, but, unless you want info on winning a case in a court of law, this book is worthless. This book encourages you to manipulate your loved ones, but it is light on its facility. I am embarrassed for Gowdy.I have thrown 2 books in the trash in the past 20 years. This was one.

Entertaining and Informative
Five stars does not express how much I enjoyed this book. It is by far one of the best books I have ever read. Trey Gowdy not only provides incredibly valuable information on how to use questions to influence people, but he does it in an extremely entertaining and easy to absorb manner. His real life stories help drive home the lessons he is teaching and his humor breaks up what many people would consider a boring topic into an entertaining journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the need to influence other people. And if you don't have the need to influence other people and are just looking for an entertaining book, you can't go wrong with this book.

Great treatice on persuasion
Easy to read book very personable with illustrating stories from Trey Gowdy's own experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking to start or improve persuading others. Recommend reading and rereading carefully over time. There are a lot of good points which need to be chewed on and digested if you want to put them into practice in your own communications. I found that I was able to put into practice, quite consciously, a couple of different points after only reading the book for a short time.

Overpriced Book
This book is overpriced.1. Too much unnecessary parallelism2. Too much trivial and unnecessary examples3. Examples are not (closely) related to the arguments/points4. Too much repetitive information5. Main points in each sections are not deep enough6. Some contradictions in the book7. Spent too much details on how “I “ worked hard for each case, with a “great” heart and motivation8. You can’t ignore the author’s political beliefs in this book, but it called itself a “self-help” bookSome parts are interesting and intriguing. It will be better if it’s much shorter, and less expensive.I wish I could get some money back.If it’s possible.

Great read
Mr. Gowdy brings a refreshing perspective to the art of persuasion. If you liked watching him perform in the US Congress as the Representative for SC, you'll like reading this book.

A good speaker and to the point
Was a gift for my brother in law. I don’t know if he has read it yet but he has seen him in person and said he was a good speaker. I will assume he loves the book
