A few ignorant reviewers thought that this would be a Harry Potter type series (simply because the heroine is a young girl). This is definitely not Harry Potter and I can only recommend it for intelligent teenagers and adults. Thankfully, there is no Game of Thrones type gratuitous violence or ugly, unnecessary sex thrown in! This is based on Philip Pullman's science fiction/fantasy trilogy books. I urge anyone who has not read them to buy the hardback books - they are still available if you search and I recommend the beautiful 3 volume set - not the single thick volume containing all three novels in one hardback book. It's hard to handle and the quality is not as good as the three individual hardback books with excellent cover art.This series is part one of Pullman's landmark fantasy (based on the Golden Compass). He is also one of the executive producers so this is true to his vision and captures the spirit of the classic book. The photography, music and special effects are all outstanding and it is well cast. One Amazon viewer mentioned a gorgeous woman with a beautiful profile dressed in Victorian clothes. The person does not exist - unless they have her confused with Mrs. Coulter - who is an ordinary looking woman dressed in modern clothes. It's rare to see television that has higher production values than many theatrical releases, but this one does.Buy the Blu-ray set. The quality is vastly superior to the "streamed" version. His Dark Materials has a spiritual quality somewhat like Lord of the Rings. The ending is powerful and I was sad to see it conclude. I'm eagerly looking forward to part two (based on the Subtle Knife) - starting in November 2020. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait 6 months or more for the Blu-ray set, but it will be well worth the wait.

Very pleased with condition of DVD and service

Package and shipping was perfect.I'm a big fan of the stories. I like the ways the different story lines are intertwined.I'm not a big fan of the acting and casting. It's just ok. Most directors will tell you that casting is key...but oh well. Its ok but not great. With material like this, the casting should be better...that's all (although the appearance of Harry Melling, who played Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films, was a nice surprise).The production is amazing; sets, special effects, cinematography, sound design, EVERYTHING is superbly done...flawless. The animals (daemons) are tactfully done and their presence never becomes overwhelming.I can only really describe this show as absolutely classy.

False advertising, the digital code expired in 2021. They should not advertise as blu ray + digital when the code has already expired. I would not have purchased if I knew there would be no digital code. Discs came fine though, that’s why I’ve given 2 stars.

I bought the second season when it came out but realized I needed to view season one first and promptly ordered it on Amazon. It was only with great effort that I didn't plow through both seasons at one sitting but I still had to watch at least 2 episodes at each sitting. Acting is great, great character development, cinematography is awesome - they took advantage of digital technology to make the colors and scenery pop.

I read these books years ago and loved them so much I read them again shortly thereafter. I was thrilled to hear that HBO and BBC were making them into a series because they deserve to be done right (looking at you, Hollywood). And they didn't disappoint. Can't wait for season 2 to be released and praying that the 3rd is made!I would most liken it to "Harry Potter" and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (though Lewis might chafe at the comparison).

I was a fan of the Golden Compass movie and was hoping they would have a follow on movie. But when I saw this item I discovered this is even better and follows the novels much closer. The acting is great and the story is really great too. I highly recommend this and hope to get the follow on series too!

Nach dem Film, der leider keine Fortsetzung erfahren hat, habe ich binnen zwei Abenden die originalen drei Bücher verschlungen und für sensationell befunden. Den Film habe ich in der Zwischenzeit noch einige Male gesehen und war begeistert, als HBO, die sich ja mit einigen Serien einen guten Namen gemacht haben, sich des Themas annahm. Nach der ersten Folge musste ich pausieren, zu fremd waren die Figuren im Vergleich zum Film. Auch die Besetzung war nicht so nach meinen Vorstellungen. Nachdem ich allerdings ja alle Folgen erworben hatte, dachte ich, warum nicht. Am Ende hat es sich gelohnt, auch wenn ich den Film immer noch in Summe stimmiger finde, gerade von der Ausstattung, Besetzung und CGI. Ein wenig enttäuscht bin ich auch von Musik, nur, wenn sie Anleihen bei Horner oder Djawadi nimmt, wirkt sie mitreissend. Das sind der Beginn des Abspanns und das Ende des Vorspanns.Als Fan der Bücher kann man unbedenklich zugreifen, als Fan des Filmes erfordert es ein wenig Überwindung.Sehr erfreulich ist auch, dass HBO die Serie wohl zu Ende führt, Staffel 2 ist fertig und die finale Staffel 3 beauftragt. Da keiner der bekannten Streamingdienste beteiligt ist, ist auch eine Veröffentlichung auf physischem Medium nicht unwahrscheinlich. Schon das allein rechtfertigt ja leider schon eine positivere Bewertung in heutigen Zeiten.

Der goldene Kompass steht als DVD seit Jahren im Regal, wurde Zeit das sich jemand findet der die ganzen 3 Bücher verfilmt. His Dark Materials erzählt endlich wie es weitergeht über die Besetzung der Lyra kann man sich streiten, mir gefiel die Darstellerin aus dem goldenen Kompass besser, reine Geschmacksache. Ansonsten finde ich gut erzählt, ausführlich genug und schon mit Überleitungen auf die 2. Staffel in der ersten was mir sehr gefällt.Es gibt aber auch Kritik die ich anbringen muss, heute 19.2.2021 gibt es die 2.Staffel schon in OV auf Englisch per Blueray. Warum zum Teufel nicht auf Deutsch und Amazon und JPC (letzterer bietet OV auf Blueray an) haben keine Ahnung wann das für diejenigen die keine Lust auf Englisch haben erscheint. Ansonsten werde ich definitiv alle 3 Staffeln (die 3. ist noch garnicht fertig) kaufen und empfehle sie gerne weiter.

His Dark Materials: Staffel 1 [Blu-ray]Total an mir vorbei gegangen, warum sagt mir Niemand das es sich Hier um den goldenen Kompass handelt ;) Spaß Beiseite! Vergesst den alten Film, schaut Euch die Serie an. Für mich verging die Zeit wie im Flug.Ganz klar es ist keine 1:1 Adaption des Buches, ein Film/Serie muss bisschen anders unterhalten als ein Buch. Ja ich kenne das (Hör)Buch und meckern an der Serie wäre auf gaaaanz, gaaanz hohem Niveau.

Ich war bereits ein großer an der Bücher und bin von dieser filmischen Umsetzung begeistert. Die Geschichte wird von Anfang an spannend erzählt und verliert diese Spannung bis zum Schluss nicht. Auch die vielen Details auf die geachtet wurde, sind bemerkenswert. Das einzige Manko an der deutschen Version ist die typische Blue-Ray Plastikverpackung. Die englische Papp-Version ist eindeutig Schmuckvoller und mit Bonus-Karten versehen.

Der Kinofilm von 2007 hatte, außer schönen Bildern, nicht sonderlich viel mit den Bücher gemein und hat mich persönlich sehr enttäuscht. Die Serien schlägt ihn, trotz das die Computeranimationen hier etwas einfacher gehalten sind, um Längen! Man fiebert mit den Schauspielern mit und auch inhaltlich erfährt man deutlich mehr und korrekt aus den Originalbüchern, auch wenn die Drehbuchautoren sich kleinere künstlerische Freiheiten genommen haben.
