Ice Dogs

A smart, compelling survival story!
When 14-year-old dogsled racer Victoria sets out for her neighbor's with a small team of dogs, her biggest concern is making it back home before her mom realizes she's gone. Things take an unexpected turn when she happens upon a snowmobile accident and a dazed boy she doesn't recognize. With the snowmobile out of the equation, Victoria must make sure the boy gets back home safely. With instructions from the boy, she sets of in search of his house. Before long Victoria realizes that they're heading further and further into the wilderness and, by the time the boy admits he might not know the woods as well as he implied, Victoria, the boy, and her dogs are stranded with night and frigid temperatures quickly approaching. Things get even more complicated - and deadly - when their map is lost and the small amount of food Victoria packed is quickly consumed, leaving Victoria with little more than her wits to rely on if the group is going to survive the fierce Alaskan wilderness.I can't stress how much I appreciate ICE DOGS. Growing up in northern Michigan with a passion for reading, I never tired of books about kids surviving on their own in the wilderness. Books by Gary Paulsen and Jean Craighead George were on constant check-out from the library and, for years, my favorite animal was the Peregrine falcon because of the bird's central role in Craighead George's MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. I'm confident that if I would have read ICE DOGS as a kid, Victoria would have been my new role model and the Siberian Husky my favorite animal. There are simply not enough books within this subgenre that feature a female protagonist. Victoria is a smart, capable, and compassionate character in an action-packed, high stakes adventure and young readers will love her.Not only is this survival story utterly captivating from an entertainment standpoint, I was surprised by how much I learned about survival and dog sledding. I'm not saying I could go out and survive like Victoria did if I somehow found myself lost in even the forest behind my house, but I have a whole new level of respect for dog sledding and nature. Johnson doesn't oversimplify or patronize her audience, she treats them with respect and successfully engages readers with a real-life intensity.

Good read
Reading this with my 5th graders. They love it and it's full of action and breathtaking bits. I didn't give it 4 stars because there are a couple lines here and there that I have to skip over because they are more for high-school not elementary.

A Dog Sledding Experience
I finished this book a while back and had read several since. So my poor memory just gives me my thoughts as I read and completed it. It was obvious to me that the author was writing from first hand experience, not imagination. I have a great deal of experience with dogs, but not any with dog sledding. So it was a most enjoyable and educational for me to read this book. It was well written and "hard to lay down". After finishing it I was able to read about the author and confirm my guess that it was a dog sledding expert. I believe that owners of dogs that work in any capacity would especially enjoy this book.

interesting dog and mushing angle, and a strong main character
Victoria is a fourteen-year-old musher who gets caught in a snowstorm. She has to take care of not just herself, but her beloved dogs and a lost, clumsy city boy named Chris. There’s the frigid Alaskan weather, injuries, a dwindling supply of food, and so much more they have to deal with. Even when things look bleak, Victoria struggles and persists in finding her way to safety for all of them. This is an amazing adventure story with a wonderful dog and mushing angle that I found interesting. Because of the main character’s age and fast pace, this seems to be upper MG, young YA.

Easy story line
This was a great book to read. Very easy story line about a girl who runs a team of husky dogs in Alaska. On a trip out to visit a friend of her deceased father, she gets herself into difficulties which nearly cost her life. However, she was prepared to sacrifice herself for her team of dogs. This book shows that living in these remote areas of Alaska can be perilous and that life can be cut short due to poor decision making and simple mistakes. I would certainly recommend this book for a quick read.

brilliant
A great story that had me hooked from beginning to end. I'm really keen to read more by this author and so pleased to have found them. Believable in everywhere and well developed characters and the dogs just Wow! I want to be a musher now, although I'm not sure I could hack the cold. A definite must read.
