Big payoffs hereโฆ and groundwork for future stories!
Steel and Stone is the 14th book in the Alastair Stone Chronicles. This one is unlike any other book in the series, as it is truly a standalone story. The power of this standalone story is that R.L. King uses it to focus in on an intriguing fan-favorite character whoโs popped up a couple of times in earlier books. If you want to know about Trevor Harrison, his backstory, and where he gets his peculiar form of magic, wait no more! This book tells all! Wellโฆ. This book tells *most*. One of King's strengths as an author is the ability to lay clues and answer questions WHILE RAISING NEW QUESTIONS! Steel and Stone pays off big time. It advances some of the big series story arcs. And it sets up future stories. Itโs a very satisfying read, and it still leaves you wanting more!

Great story, as with all the "Stone Chronicles"!
Alistair Stone, bereft of his ability to utilize his White Magic powers after 'ashing' his sister in defence of Verify and himself, finds himself addicted to the 'Rush' he gets from taking power from others as a black mage must. Growing increasingly desperate to escape his dark urges, he makes a desperate attempt to access the dimension of Trevor Harrison to ask him to teach him to use the strange magic that Harrison uses.

Entertaining and adventurous
I couldn't put book down. But as usual there was too much info on mundane stuff so I speed read thru that. It was also annoying how Stone acted like a super jerk in part of his training. I found that unbelievable. This was one of the better books in series. I'm looking forward to Stone and Claws

This series just keeps getting better
This story may seem like it's going in a different direction than the previous books, but R.L. King has been setting the stage for it pretty much since the beginning of the series, with the concept of portals to other dimensions which can house sentient beings, and with the introduction of Trevor Harrison in The Source - and I love how it's turned out!We get to learn more about the elusive Harrison and about where he is when he's not in Las Vegas (well, one of the places he may be ...), but this book doesn't wrap up that arc by a long shot. If anything, it has opened up a whole new world of possibilities, if you'll pardon the pun. And what would a Stone story be if it didn't leave a few new questions open for us to ponder while we wait for the next book?A word of caution - you may have trouble putting this book down once you start reading it. Also, you may want to yell at Stone a few times for various reasons throughout the book, but that's part of what makes him so engaging. Enjoy the ride!

Excellent story
This, for me, was an exciting, much anticipated, page turning episode in the world of Alastair Stone. The plot has been building up in the previous books to Stone finding a way to use the strange and powerful magic Trevor Harrison possessed. In Steel and Stone, Alastair is against a wall, either find a way around it to harness the strange power or accept the unpleasant fact that he must depend on Jason or use the dangerously addicting method of taking energy from other willing sources to refuel his power. He chooses the dangerous and unknown path to find the mysterious Trevor Harrison with the hope the man would teach him how to use his powerful magic. As in all of the Alastair Stone stories, Steel and Stone is an exciting adventure into Stone's world with plenty of action and a great deal of danger. While the story wraps up satisfactorily and it closes the door on the plot of Stone's problem with his magic, King has left open doors to new adventures for Alastair, involving his new magic source and Trevor Harrison.

Wow!
That was amazing. How does R. L. conjure these stories? They are so different. A little science, physics, politics and a lot of magic. Bravo.

Will he get his magic back??
I SO love Alastair Stone novels. The author always comes up with such great story lines. This book is one of those great adventures. How Dr. Stone finds himself in another dimensional world, without his magic and suffering abuse under those with magic, all in an attempt to find the elusive Master Mage, Trevor Harrison, in the hopes that he can help him channel his power without having to take it from others, had me on the edge of my seat for the whole ride! (This new dimension offers many possibilities for many more stories, even if the author doesnโt immediately go there.) Dr. Stone still has plenty to deal with right here, and I hope that we still get many more stories about this dimension. Keep writing and weโll keep reading!!

Brilliant - just get it!
Brilliant - another fantastic installment in this series that just gets better and better! This one takes us to a different world which opens all sorts of possibilities for the future, though I'm looking forward to seeing Alastair back home with Raider, Verity, Jason et al in future books. One very small gripe is Alastair's use of the word "gotten" - it's not a word used normally in the UK and I would think even less by those who have been educated in the private sector. But maybe he's picked up a bit of American having lived there for some time.Either way, roll on book 15!

These books just get better and better
These books just get better and better. R L King creates a whole new, terrifying world for Stone in his quest to get his power back. It's a superb addition to an already very strong series and already I can't wait for the next one.

Fantastic!
In this book the author introduces us to a whole new world, literally! It is one of the best books in the series and I hope to see a spin off series based on Calanar and its characters.Stone faces new challenges, harder than anything he has ever faced before and now he is alone, in a complete different environment, without his magick, without money or influence. And to make the matters worse, he cannot even read the language. For those familiar with Stone you will understand why this is so hard for him. He is a scholar, a university professor, with a PhD. He could always count on his intellectual prowess before. Now, deprived of everything that makes him who he is, he has to harness his inner strength to overcome what seems to be insurmountable odds in order to recover his magick.
