Fondly remembered from childhood
I read this probably in sixth grade, in 1972. The Dickensian mood and atmosphere lingered long after the plot points were forgotten. I still recall those hours I spent immersed in 18th century London, a world convincingly recreated by Leon Garfield, in the company of the ragamuffin pickpocket so poor, it seems, he could afford only one name.

Masterly
I read this when I was eleven, and loved it. Garfield was a very find story-teller, and "Smith" is one of his best. His descriptions of London are reasonably authentic - though I am not sure that debtors were lodged in Newgate. The use of "The Document" to drive the plot along is masterly.I bought this copy for my daughter. She liked it too.
