Is it possible to type without putting down my pen using this product? ?

Yes. I was able to type with the grip on after I covered the point of the pencil with a cap. Could also do it with a retractable pen. I am a very fast typist and it slowed me up a bit, also I would not use it when I'm typing a large amount.

I have a trigger thumb that won't bend. I can't hold a pen/pencil normally so I'm wondering if this could help me use mostly my first finger...?

As long as you could keep your thumb straight down the side it should work with your index finger placing a bit of pressure down the center of the gripper. Since each person's situation varies cannot say for certain it will be work.
