Incredible game.
This is a high quality reprint of the classic strategy game 1830 by Francis Tresham. This game has a lot of depth and plays completely differently every time, despite being zero variance (like chess, all information about game state is known at all times and the only random element between games is the initial player order.)I wouldn't buy this game unless you are up for playing a heavy 6 hour strategy game with often cutthroat player interaction. But if you are, and more likely, if you're already familiar with the 18XX genre and know what you're getting into, I would highly recommend this edition of 1830.There is one problem worthy of note with this edition, and that is that some tiles in this edition were misprinted. There are two spots on the board (Ottawa and Detroit & Windsor) that have mislabeled prices, but the game comes with replacement tiles for these which you can overlay on the board to correct the errors. The other error is that on the 'artistic' side of the brown city tiles, the tiles are misprinted as having value 50 instead of the correct 40. The 'classic' side of the tiles has the correct $40 value. Also, Mayfair Games is releasing a tile-sheet to correct all of the errata, which they will ship to you free of charge once it becomes available, hopefully in a couple of months from this writing on 2/23/12.

This Edition is a Great Improvement over the old AH edition!
I loved the old Avalon Hill version of 1830; I can't count how many times I've played it. When I first heard about the recent revision/reprint of this game by Mayfair, I thought "Why would I need it", especially since I had the "Reading RR Variant" from "The General" (AH's old company magazine). After researching the Mayfair components on Board Game Geek, and having enjoyed Mayfair's offerings of 1856 and 1870 (and the quality of their components, etc.), I decided to "take the plunge" and purchase this edition.Got it today, opened it up, and I am VERY pleased! I was also pleased that the edition I purchased did indeed have the "Errata Tiles" (which were provided by Mayfair to early purchasers). I was VERY pleased that this edition not only includes the old "Reading RR variant", but also variants for "Pere Marquette RR", "Nickel Plate RR" and Norfolk & Western Rwy".All of the components in this new edition--particularly the track tiles and the Map, are beautiful, and very well done.I can't wait to play this!I can't wait to

We love this!
Not as complicated as it appears- In the game plays very different depending on how many players you have. So much fun!

Excelente juego, el padre de los juegos 18xx. Se requiere ser un jugador habitual y de al menos unas 4 horas para disfrutar la experiencia.

robber barons review
this is a fun but complicated game it is very long but does not have to be played all the way through it is a nice mix of both the stock end of things and the railroading end I would recommend it to anyone who like railroad games and strategy games

Came missing parts, mfg no longer replaces parts, have to return
Used to play this a lot. Thought would be a good game to teach my kids who enjoy Train and themantic games. Upon arrival it was evident that half the cards were missing. Also the paper band the money came wrapped in didn't contain the money and it was all mixed up in the box and some had been bent and creased. Attempted to contact the publisher about replacing the missing cards and they no longer replace parts. Their response is to return and get a replacement. Poor customer service and quality control. Decided to just return and not take our chances on a second box also missing parts.

New revised version brings back a classic in great form.
Good seeing the rules clarified in this revised version. The antiquey looking maps is great.
