Magical Girl Apocalypse Vol. 1

Could This Be Deathnote 2.0?
My title may seem a bit tongue in cheek, but the Magical Girls series checks off everything I loved about Deathnote:Suspense that you feel - Is your favorite character destined to die?The most mundane objects become conduits to great power - What am I supposed to do with an out-dated cellphone? How about a pair of panties?Incredible characters and their development - You WILL find a connection with at least one of these characters; probably a lot more.Crazy yet believable world, made possible by the author - the setting doesn't always need to be hell or some fairytale land. Sometimes the scariest place to be is right here where we are.If you liked Deathnote, I urge you to pick up the first volume at minimum. I'm telling you, you will be hooked! Good luck!

Splatter Punk meets Manga
Magical Girl Apocalypse is gory, nasty, goofy and moves at a break neck pace. The set up is brief, and within the first few pages blood is being spilled, flesh is being ripped and creepy girls are screaming "magical". Oh, and there are zombies. Magical girl zombies who are strong enough to smash someone's head with one fist.First off, this book is gory. No, not just violent. Gory. Characters are not just killed, but ripped to shreds, and it is all drawn in dripping, stomach churning detail. Anyone and everyone can, and most likely will, die in horrific and brutal ways. This is both a strength of this book, and a weakness. It's a strength in that the stakes are sky high, and the reader is never made to feel comfortable. It weakens the book in the fact, that outside of the two main characters, the reader is not given a group of characters to connect with. While the group starts to solidify a bit towards the end, it is hard to become invested in any one particular character when you realize how disposable they are. Still, if a character annoys you (and there are a few that have major potential) just rest easy knowing that in a page or two they will probably be burned alive, or be sliced in half. So... yay! This volume is almost all set up. It is establishing the threat, and the many creepy cute forms it can take. Once the attack starts (and that is within the first five or ten pages), the pace never slows. There are a few quick glimpses as to what is causing the attack, and maybe a vague hint or two as to who or what may be behind the sudden appearance of the magical girls, but the actually plot is very limited, as most of the page count is spent on characters fleeing, and more often than not, dying violently. There is some humor to be found in these pages, and with the over the top nature of the whole story, it fits well. The magical girls themselves are very creepy, with a wide eyed, doll like appearance that is in sharp contrast to the more typical manga looking main characters. Their clothes, weapons, and lifeless faces are wonderfully designed, and show real skill and creativity. The human characters are varied looking, with detailed expressions, although there are some issues when it comes to the female characters, with some one of the more well endowed characters chests not only defying physics, but also basic anatomy. Still, each character has a distinct look and feel, and in a cast this large, that is key to helping the reader keep the who's who straight. The gore, as I said, is drawn in detail. Heads are ripped open or blown off, holes are blown through bodies, people are impaled, ripped in half... you get the idea. Obviously, this book is not for the weak stomached or the sensitive. If you are looking for a true splatter manga, then Magical Girl Apocalypse is perfect for you. If you are looking for actual magic girls, though, look elsewhere.

gore
Well, I'm sure teens will think it's deep and edgy. Otherwise, it's pretty silly in its absurdity and might be enjoyable to anyone who finds that amusing.

Great!!
Read the entire thing online and fell in love with it. Ending was kinda wack but it is what it is and I love it for everything it is.

Bloody And Bleak!
Things escalate pretty darn quickly in this manga. Everyone dies in gory glory! I'm gonna have to buy all the volumes!

I wasn't sure about this until reading it.
Exactly what the title suggests. This is perfect for any fan of over-the-top Japanese horror manga. This dark comedy is beyond gory, and the murderous action begins almost immediately.

The End of the World isn't meant to be fun...
And it certainly isn't in this bleak tale. I kind of get the feeling someone asked Brian Keene to write a Magical Girl manga and this is the twisted result. There's none of that gung-ho survivalist gun-nut macho fantasy that you find in a lot of "apocalypse" stories; it's a nail biting descent into horror where the only victory is surviving just one more second. This is relentless reading (you WILL finish it in one sitting) and I'm curious where the characters will end up. But it's refreshing realising that you honestly don't know who will survive from page to page. Recommended.

I have been waiting a long time for this manga to get a official English translation after reading some poor fan translations a few years ago and I was not disappointed. Cannot wait to read the rest of the series.

It's pretty full on
It's very fast moving, gory and tries to shock you outright, which it really does at times. Is a fun read, if you like horror; go for it.
