A History of Modern Europe

Great book for overview of European History
Like many people, I have forgotten more than I remember with respect to history. After a trip to Europe, it was readily apparent that I was not at all up on my European history. I spent some time researching books that were readable cover to cover and ultimately purchased this book. The author does a good job of connecting the chapters to one another and literally stepping through history. I found the book objective and factual and not tremendously editorialized with the author's perspective. I highly recommend this book to someone that is keenly interested in European history. It is a great survey book on the topic.

Great textbook
Good introductory text for this subject - I am using it to teach a homeschool European History course to an 11th grader and I feel it covers all of the topics he need to know to have a basic grounding in modern European history. The writing is engaging and I appreciate the questions at the end of the chapter which enable good discussions of the text.

I would recommend this to people who are keenly interested specifically in ...
Although this text covers a lot of time (generally the Renaissance through twentieth century Europe) this professor has a focus on the nineteenth century. Comparatively, he spends the most amount of time discussing this time period. I would recommend this to people who are keenly interested specifically in Europe during the 19th century. It describes the changes that an emerging middle class (from the Industrial Revolution) in Europe caused with respect to the Old Regime. If you want more information on the 20th century read "Europe in the Twentieth Century" by Paxton.

It lags badly when I try to scroll with my touchpad. The arrow keys for flipping the pages works fine just the scrolling.

Well - Written and Interesting
This is great text. I can be used as a reference, but is well - written enough to read cover to cover.

Dr. Merriman Rules!!!
This text is not only for the serious European History scholar, it is for anyone/everyone who is interested in how Europe was shaped, and in turn, shaped the Western world.Dr. Merriman has written, updated, a text that was amazing in the first edition. This third edition is even better.

... who give courses for The Learning Company (only they recommended the Second Edition
This book was suggested by two professors who give courses for The Learning Company (only they recommended the Second Edition, presumably because the Third was not yet available), so I gave it to my husband who says it's easy to read and covers the history thoroughly, with great detail and clarity.

Excellent purchase.
I'd wholeheartedly recommend this text. The book was delivered on-time and also in perfect condition. It's extremely easy to read but goes into sufficient detail for the layperson or the undergraduate. A must have text for anyone interested in modern history.
