Second picture shows the railing and corner post in proximity to an entry door to the porch that I built.These brackets can make almost anyone with a bit of building skills be able to install their own railings. That said, I will describe what I did to make their use more aesthetically pleasing. I’ll start with some basic information:My railings are used on deck platforms about 5’ x 6’ , or so, on either side of a covered porch. They are only about 2’ off the ground.For my installation, I felt the brackets looked better installed with the open end facing down because I am not using a cap board on top of the railings. This was a design decision made by me. We don’t have young children and the height of the deck is only about 2 feet from ground level. One would have to consider the level of safety which works for you.I felt that putting the brackets directly onto the 2’ x 4’ left about 1/8” of the board protruding from the bracket. That was not visually appealing to me so I cut notches in the corners of each of the boards. The notches are about 1/8” deep by about 3/8” in. This allows the board to have a more custom fit.You will have to be sure you measure your rails carefully and allow for the thickness of the bracket on either end to fit properly between your posts.I suggest drilling pilot holes before putting the screws in for ease of installation. I also assembled my railings before installation. My balusters are the round aluminum type.
