I expected a better coverage of aquatic systems
It's OK. I expected a better coverage of aquatic systems, particularly relating to the Chihuahua Desert.

The benchmark publication on Southwestern habitat and communities
Brown and Lowe's Biotic Communities of the Southwest withstands the test of time. The data were collected over three decades ago, but it still remains as the most accurate reference here. Numerous land classification systems exist, with some finely splitting communities onto sub-communities and so on. But, when used with the accompanying map, you can travel around and know which biotic community you are in. What makes this book unique is that it includes all the associated flora and fauna that comprise the community. As a baseline reference, this could make for a great follow up book analyzing the changes that have taken place across the Southwest. Many communities have shifted over time, and this would be a great comparison.

A must for anyone participating in the Southwest's landscape
This book is the baseline reference for any naturalist seeking to better understand the southwestern landscape. I refer to mine often. Be sure to get the companion map.
