Useful guide
Excellent information contained within. The most valuable fact I found in this book, was that persons with foreign (non-Indian) passports can enter the Foreigner Booking Office at the New Delhi Train Station 24/7, and get tickets to wherever you're going without waiting in line downstairs.

A great place to start your planning but take your smart phone when you travel to a place like Rajasthan.
For world travel planning Lonely Planet has always been go to resource. Our recent India travel decisions, both pre booking and on the ground/in the moment, were more influenced by TripAdvisor reviews and online searches. The immediacy of these resources can not be beat. Google maps was far superior and accessible for communicating with taxi drivers, etc. The books are a wonderful place to start your planning and for overviews but, unless you are traveling without a smart phone, clunky by comparison when you land somewhere.

Buy the old version instead!
do not buy this version of this guide - buy the older version instead!! This guide is 120 pages SHORTER than the old one and numerous descriptions have been shortened and even left out in this guide from the older one! for instance - the monkey temple in jaipur does not appear in this guide and does in the older one - why on earth lonely planet chose to put LESS information into an "updated" guide is beyond me - I've been using lonely planet guides for years and this calls into question for me whether I should continue or not...I'm travelling with someone with the older guide and its amazing how many times his older guide has more information than this newer one - again - BUY THE OLDER VERSION OF THIS BOOK
