Lancelot Brenton's translation of the Septuagint was a godsend in 1844. It has been rendered absolutely obsolete in the interim by (a) the rediscovery of early, major codices of the whole Septuagint like Codex Sinaiticus (4th century AD) which, together with Alexandrinus and Vaticanus (5th and 4th centuries, respectively), offer us a much earlier snapshot of the text of the Septuagint than was available to Brenton 178 years ago. Add to that the significant advances in Greek lexicography and understanding of Greek syntax, and buying this is the equivalent of buying a Commodore 64 when ThinkPads are available for the same price. Check out the New Oxford Annotated Apocrypha providing the NRSV translation of these books (1989) along with generous annotations by scholars of the Second Temple Period to assist, listing for $20 on Amazon but available used for less. Or just avail yourself of the ESV Apocrypha (2010 or 2011 for most of it) published by Cambridge for $21 new.
