The Art of the Graphic Memoir: Tell Your Story, Change Your Life

Insightful
I actually wrote a whole graphic memoir before reading this book, but it provided so much insight into the process and what it possible. Specifically I think readers will benefit from Hart's advice on where to begin as the process is so personal, often so painful, and therefore so overwhelming. This is for anyone who is a fan of the genre or looking to begin writing as a memoirist, visual or not.

Variety
Great variety of exercises that expose the reader to different comic artists. Also has a very arresting story about a father coping with the death of his daughter. Excellent book! Highly recommend it!!

Good addition to your writers library
I think it’s impossible to get one book that goes over everything. That being said, The Art of the Graphic Memoir is a good aid, or addition, to your library. It’s a good book to have to point you in a direction, give you some pointers, and sets you lose from there to do your thing arty farty. Those seeking guidance on writing may be disappointed, as this book doesn’t really go over how to build the structure of your story. A good book to look into for that might be Fast Draft Your Memoir by Racheal Herron. Overall, for what it is, I found this book helpful.

Get ready for some serious memoiring
In all seriousness this book has been super helpful in getting me started on my memoir. What a memoir? So lame, totally self absorbed and oh wow, it sure feels good to draw this stuff out… damn that was some heavy sheet. Oh dude! You liked it? It made you feel less alone in the world? Yes yes it did. This is like a text for our writing group.
Everyone has a story. We think only professional artist can do an illustrated story. This book shows us how to express an emotion, idea, remembrance-- even it it's only to "frames" or a page. Full of amazing examples of graphic artists who's work I did not think of as memoirs, but of course are exactly that. There are many examples and guides about the process for the writer and encouragement to explore one's own style-- underdeveloped, unpolished is okay. I love this book.

Beautiful book, very inspiring.
I have taken a few of Tom's classes online, and he never fails to inspire. His gentle nature can be felt in this book as he guides you through the steps of organizing and creating. Be aware, this book does not cover illustration, it is for writing.

Visual and extensive
March 03, 2020A REVIEW OF THE ART OF THE GRAPHIC MEMOIR BY TOM HARTTom Hart's The Art of the Graphic Memoir works on two levels: first, as an exploration of how to construct a graphic memoir for one's self; second, as an appreciation of graphic memoirs that already exist.I most appreciated the way this book explored graphic memoirs in publication, and I learned details about graphic novels that I've owned for years, including how they were inspired and how the author/artists composed them. The graphic novel, I feel, is a medium that is taken for granted and often misunderstood in its complexity. Moreover, Hart's work inspires and the author shares ideas for creating a nexus of words and pictures to explore life experience. It is this combination of author and artist that is most cool. I recommend this book for readers of graphic novels...and anyone who may think, even in some small way, that they want to create a graphic memoir.Everyone needs a voice and graphic novels provide a unique way to share that voice.

Helpful
Very good for panel story telling. But not the style I am looking for for my illustrated memoir. I wish I had been able see a sample before buying as I would not have purchased. But it’s excellent for this style.

Less history more instruction
Would have preferred a more hands on approach, instruction and less context,
