I have just purchased my second bat house as the first one was so successful. I chose this bat house because it is made out of wood from Maine and as we live in CT that was what all the sites recommend. We placed it high up on the south facing end of the barn with a clear drop down for them to exit. We did not get bats until the 2nd season - we had (19) bats living in the first house this summer - great product ...

Arrived with unsanded/ unfinished edges. Some areas (whole side) of splinters 1/8-1/4" sticking up from cut wood. I'm wondering if the raw pine will last in the weathering elements. I thought, for the price, it would be more professionally constructed. Also, I followed directions carefully and no bats after 5-6 weeks :(

This is a very solidly built bat box. I was really happy to see that it's handcrafted in Maine. The splintering referenced in other reviews is due to the use of a router to round the edges; as pine is a soft wood, this is very common. The edges can either be sanded or left as is (I don't think the bats will particularly mind). The mounting hardware is of good quality and solidly installed. The information and care/installations instructions packet was very informative and gave me a good idea on how to best attract bats and when to expect to see them. I am very pleased with this piece to US craftsmanship and would happily recommend this purchase to someone else or buy it again as a gift.
