True martingale with no buckle; runs very large
My 75-lb mix is an escape artist, so we have used Martingales for her since we adopted her at 3 months. She is now nearly 2. She walks very well on a leash but if she gets scared of a noise or something she will try to back out of her collar, which martingales completely prevent. Her last collar got a hole in it so we needed a replacement. We love Petsafe harnesses so I was happy to order this harness at such a great price. A few things to know: first, sizing is way off and they run large. My dog’s neck is 19” and over her ears she is 20”. I got this collar in large (12” to 20”) and after slipping it over her head, I had to adjust the sizing down to nearly the smallest size - maybe only 3-4 more inches left. There is no way this would fit a dog with a 12” neck. I’m keeping it because it does fit her. (For Petsafe easy walk harness, she fits medium/large size.) Second, the product information and instructions are terrible (I’ve attached photos of the tags), which explains why so many people think the martingale loop does not tighten and just hangs down. You have to adjust the loops as someone explains very well in another review, and then it works as a martingale collar. Third, there is a plastic tag on one side to hang ID tags. The plastic seems flimsy but it’s a nice feature. Or you can hang tags from one of the martingale loops. All in all, a great collar. I may order another one in purple just to be able to switch out to reduce wear and tear, but I’ll try medium and see if that sizing is better for her. This one has no buckle which we prefer so we don’t have to worry about the buckle breaking. The nylon webbing is pretty soft; her previous one was quite stiff when new so this one already feels broken in. We’ve gone on walks and all is well; no issues with the collar or the martingale feature at all. For the price and brand reliability, you can’t beat this one. There are some issues with the instructions and sizing but I did not deduct any stars because the price and reliability are the key factors for me.

The only collar that can save your dogs life.
These collars save dogs lives. I was walking down a on leash trail with my dogs when an off leash dog walking with its owner decided to attack my dog right at the last moment as we were passing by no indication no warning. With my reflexes I pulled my dog up (ouch a little for my dog) this tightened up on her neck and pulled her up into my arms and out of the other dogs reach so she only had a lot of slobber on her side instead of a bite. Her neck was fine not tweaked or weird or bruised or anything after this event I watched her for weeks to make sure. I truly believe that if I had a buckle collar on she would have slipped out of it and would have gotten a bad bite from the aggressive dog. My dog also has a walking harness and she can slip out of that if I pull up on it (simulating the dog attack) we've tested it to see which is more safe for her and walks and the collar wins every time. I volunteer at a shelter and we use these to walk our dogs in the only field walking space we have next to a very busy road and they truly save dogs lives by preventing all dogs from being able to slip a normal buckle collar. We use these for our tiniest chi to our larges pit-bulls and each one is safe. We do not use these as choke walking training collars we use either EZwalks or Gentile leaders in addition to these for walking behavior. These are very safe durable lovely collars for walking I highly recommend these collars they're gentle they don't choke because they only tighten around the neck if the dog is trying to pull or slip out. They get tight around the neck so the dog's head cant slip through and everybody is safe unharmed and happy. Please be aware you should never use this collar if you plan on sending your dog to a doggy day camp or other place where you have unsupervised play with random dogs get a cheap buckle collar for that and this for your walks. The D ring that pulls the neck can get grabbed by other dogs and cause your dog to choke and if it's too tight they can loose air. Only use these collars when you are walking and are close by in play groups where you can get involved to prevent collar biting and pulling during play. I do not leave these collars on my dogs when they are in the home I use them exclusively for walking the park and when im out and about and can supervise my dogs play and stop collar biting.

It is also the kind of collar they recommend in their adoption materials
When I fostered my chow chow in early April 2014, this was the kind of collar the rescue group had put on her. It is also the kind of collar they recommend in their adoption materials. So, when I adopted her in May 2014 I bought this collar for her. It's perfect for her. I like that the collar is adjustable so that she's never really choked by the collar. The collar tightens, but it only tightens until the square metal rings meet. This is different from most other choke collars that have nothing to stop them from choking as tightly as possible. This is a far more humane collar. My dog doesn't really pull on walks except when she smells something really exciting and she heels really well. I like that the collar is loose on her neck most of the time. I think it keeps her more relaxed on our walks. In fact, when I give her the slightest direction on the lead, she feels it and follows along. I have as much control over her movements as I do with a horse using its reins, and just as subtly. You wouldn't think that with a looser collar this would be true, but it is. Of course, all dogs are different. Another thing that makes this collar perfect for me and my dog is that I can use the loop as a short "handle" to help direct her when we're inside. She's totally blind, and she sometimes finds herself in a corner and can't find her way out. I only have to grab the loop and gently direct her in the right direction. Very helpful! I've hung her tags from one of the square metal rings. They're just fine there. In fact, better than fine. Since she's a chow, she has long hair. The tags are noticeable because they hang longer than they would on a tighter fitting collar. If she ever gets out of the house unattended, someone will be able to see all her information. I like that. Speaking of her hair, the collar doesn't seem to rub or break her hair off. I don't know if this is due to the material the collar is made of, or the fact that it's an inch wide, but I'm grateful. She's only worn this particular collar for 3 months now, but it's held up well. We've been caught in a rainstorm, and it dried out overnight. I've hand washed it in the sink with Dawn dishwashing liquid, and it looks like new. And with the matching lead, she looks like a princess! When this collar wears out, I'll replace it with another one just like it. Five stars.

have my reservations...
I chose to return this collar. I purchased 3. I have 3 dogs with thick necks, but small heads. I wanted a collar that was comfortable for daily wear, but that the dog couldn't back out of on lead. If I had intended to only put this on my dogs for walks, and then remove when we got home, then this would have worked. The collars did feel very solid. Although, the adjusting needed to fit the neck properly would make frequent "ons and offs" kind of a pain? However, my intent was to put it on, and leave it on. Two problems I didn't like- The premier collar has a fairly large choking loop. So much area was taken up by the choke loop, that I would worry about my kids accidentally hurting the dog by tugging too hard. In all fairness, this may be solved by my getting a smaller size? My dogs measurements were just on the edge between medium and large. I considered sending it back and trying medium...because the price is really quite fair, and the quality great. But, this brings me to problem 2. There is only one D ring...and it is, of course, on the choker loop. If you put the Dogs ID on that, it causes the choking loop to hang down. This seemed dangerous to me. It would clearly get caught on stuff and have the potential to choke the dog. But, the price is right, and the quality good. (although, I did notice the 1 inch collar was better material than the 3/4...the latter seemed to be "snaggy") I reviewed the product description and found the collar was described perfectly. I guess that I just didn't know what I was looking for until I tried it on the dog, and found it did not suit my purposes. I was able to find a Lupine collar that was perfect. Also, of course, on Amazon :)

Tested it for myself despite the negative reviews
I bought this collar for our newly adopted dog. We had an incident where she slipped out the back door and took off running while my boyfriend was taking out the trash. Ever since then, I’ve been worried that we’d lose her if she ever managed to get out of her standard breakaway collar. This gives me some peace of mind. It serves as an option for when she just needs to be let outside quickly and we don’t want to go through the hassle of putting on her harness. It really wasn’t that difficult to figure out. I think some people may be exaggerating that part a little bit. I put her on the leash and tested out the collar in my house before I ever took her out. It worked as it should. I also haven’t had any issues with it loosening up on her. I left it as it was out of the package, slipped it over her head, used the 2-finger rule to make sure it wasn’t too tight, and it’s stayed the same since. The collar is true to size. My dog is a medium-sized dog. Most medium-sized things fit her without much adjustment. This collar was no different. My conclusion in testing out this product for myself is that people are unfamiliar with this type of collar, putting it on wrong, and assuming it’s a faulty product. Complaints about there being no buckle or being too wide or whatever are invalid. If you want a collar with a buckle, get a collar with a buckle. If you want a more narrow collar, don’t buy one that says it’s an inch wide. Don’t buy this product and leave a bad review because you didn’t use common sense. If you want a simple martingale collar that does the job, give this one a go. It worked for me.

Did Not Work At All for 55 lb Pit Terrier
I just adopted a beautiful ~55 lb pit bull terrier / labrador mix and I've been attempting to train her to walk (I'm using the Dog Whisperer system as well as I can manage) and I've been trying different collar / leash combinations to see what works best. This collar did absolutely nothing to prevent my dog from pulling. If anything she pulled more on this collar than on her regular one, but that might just have been a coincidence. In any case, this collar did not work for me at all. That being said it does appear to be well made. Be aware that it doesn't "snap" like a regular collar though so it has to fit over your dogs head. Overall, well made collar but would not recommend for training a dog who has a serious pulling problem. I've been using the mendota slip lead and it works much better. Try using the figure 8 style (you can google it) as it seems to help keep the leash near the top of the nect, where it should be for maximum control. Be advised that my dog was able to slip out of the figure 8 by shaking her head, but if you're paying attention you can prevent it (when she got it off she had stopped and I kept walking. Keep your dog next to you and I don't think it will be a problem.) Just to be safe though I'm walking her with a regular leash attached to her collar along with the slip lead in a figure 8 pattern. I don't use the regularly leash to direct her but I keep it on just in case she manages to shake out of the slip lead. I hope this helps.

Walk Changer!
Love this collar! There was quite the learning curve to figure out how to put it on correctly, but I watched a youtube video explaining it and it was pretty simple. My dog is deaf, and I was worried he would slip his collar with no recall at all. My dog can't slip out of this one. I got the red and it was thick, bright, and looks great! I haven't washed it yet, but I'm not worried. It also helped with my dog's pulling, giving me a little more control and communicating to him where I am better than a harness.

An excellent Martingale collar for our Podenco Andaluz
We put this collar on our Podenco the day she arrived from the rescue shelter about 6 months ago, and it has not been off her since. It still looks as good as new with no wear to show what-so-ever. It is rarely used as a collar for walking because our dog is incredibly nervous so she requires a three-point harness for walking. That said, I think this collar is durable anyway. I guess that it is very comfortable for her to wear. She has never scratched at it, or attemped to claw at it. There is absolutely no rubbing underneath either, so no rash or fur problems at all. I highly recommend this Martingal collar by PetSafe.
