Authoritative and enjoyable
This is a really well written, absorbing history of the Commedia dell'Arte and of 16th century Venice. The research (with extensive notes) seems completely authoritative, and the book is a pleasure to read. The book focuses mostly on Pantalone, the old merchant character, and his relations with the Zanni, his servant. I would have liked more about the other stock characters, but what's here is excellent.

Very informative
A must read for anyone working in modern comedia or mask work. The background of the mask is great context to how the art form grew and has changed to be relevant today.
