Tried and true.
I have eaten these more than 15 years past purchase date and being stored in vehicle. I’m sure they saw repeated crazy hot temps and freezes. They’ll work in a pinch. Surprisingly edible without any sign of being rancid or otherwise inedible. Just bought another case.

Definitely a keeper for emergency preparedness
They are pretty good. They taste like a really dry sugar cookie or a shortbread cookie--not bad, but not great. And they crumble easily. Make sure to have water on hand. I also like that there are instructions. On land it says to eat one bar every 4 hours and on sea every 6 hours. There are 18 little cakes, so if you follow the instructions, the pack will last you 3 days on land. It would be a really good idea to have other sources of food as this will get very boring very quickly. Jelly beans and beef jerky would give some needed variety. The vacuum seal on one package was broken so we decided to try one cake. As one reviewer said, there are 18 little cakes wrapped individually in plastic. If the outer vacuum seal is broken, don't think that these will keep for the recommended 5 years. We'll just use them for hiking or as a meal replacement punishment!

Good if they don't leak, which they probably will. Good product/weak packaging.
First off Datrex bars are very calorie dense and are tasty for a food of this class. This is survival food and not health food so it is low in vitamin and minerals but packs a punch in fat and sugar calories to keep you warn, energized, and thinking clearly so you can keep going. Hold one of these 3600 calorie wonders in your had and be amazed that this is three days of survival rations. For educational value gather 3600 calories in other survival foods and be amazed at the compactness of this block of life. These contain wheat so if you have wheat allergies these are not the correct choice for you.Now the badThe product could not have been newer as it was shipped the same month as it was manufactured. Unfortunately all three packages were leakers and had lost vacuum in shipping. The Mylar foil packaging is very stiff and unfortunately thinner than it used to be so each package leaked from the corners where they contacted each other they punctured each other or impacted inside of the box because they were packed loosely. Each package must be individually wrapped in bubble wrap or foam mat or other material to protect the corners and stop shifting because the hard vacuum makes the package vulnerable to impact and the film shatters like glass. I work for a packaging equipment manufacturer for over 20 years now and we specialize in modified atmosphere packaging which is how these are packaged. These packages are vacuumed, nitrogen purged, and then vacuumed again to protect against oxidation, peroxide formation, and rancidity of the fats. If I remember correctly these bars in the past may have been packed in nylon/EVOH which is a physically strong package, but does not have as good of an oxygen/moisture barrier as this much more expensive foil film. So Datrex is not being cheap on their packaging on one hand, but they are being cheap by using a thinner material than is necessary to survive in a get home bag, vehicle or boat. If you have a Food Saver type packaging system it would be a good idea to place these in a second skin if you are not placing these on a shelf. Once the package is punctured it will loose it's nitrogen barrier and it will oxidize in a few months.

The quality isn't as good as it used to be, but pretty good still
I have always loved these, the light coconut flavor, not too greasy feeling, and not so super dry that you can't swallow them. It was time to replace my expiring ones. I bought an extra one just to taste them and I am kind of disappointed. There isn't as much flavor and they are much drier than the previous ones. But I will still get these kinds because I feel they beat all other emergency food bars I've tasted.

These are great for an emergency kit.
I like the fact that they last for 5 years if the package is not opened. I also like the taste of them; they taste somewhat like graham crackers.

These r my survival bars
I eat 5hem everyday as a very compact energy bar while bicycling 4o miles or more. They are light weight and fairly easy 2 eat. I usualy open them amd put into other ziplock bags 4 easy accessible. But they come with me every single ride I go on and 5hey have 4 decades. Literally I've been eating these since the turn of the century. Please don't believe me, they'll be more for me.

Not bad for an emergency food bar
The taste is nothing to write home about but it's certainly much better than I anticipated. I like the fact these are made with non-GMO ingredients, nut free and only 5g of sugar in each bar with 3g of protein and some vitamins as well. The bars are indeed crumbly but if you cut open one end of the cellophane wrapper you can gently slide them out whole and then break pieces off in chunks to eat. Overall quite happy with them. Would buy again if needed.
