The 0.098" kerf is from a "thin kerf blade with 3/32" width. The exact numbers will vary a few thousandths between blades and saws. This kerf blades are primarily for saws that have smaller motors. Since they are removing less wood, they are less likely to stall when cutting oak, maple, etc. You get what you pay for in blades which can range from $30 to $120. I have used Forrest blades for many years, and they are great, but pricy. The Irwin Marples 10" 50-tooth ATB blade is also excellent at about $40. If you're on a tight budget, you won't go wrong with that blade. ATB refers to Alternate Tooth Bevel where the teeth are beveled to one side and the other with a flat top in between. This blade is for cross cutting, or thin ripping.If you are ripping hard woods, you will need a rip blade which has a wider kerf. 24 or 30 teeth distinguish these blades. They have a flat grind on the top and teeth a bit wider than the blade's thickness to reduce friction on thicker stock.. There are also blades with steep bevels for cutting veneer plywood and melamine to eliminate chipping. But these are expensive and not needed unless you do a lot of this cutting.
