Bauhaus Paperback – November 18, 2002

When I first opened this, I couldn't believe I only paid 10 doll-hairs for this elegantly designed Hardbound Coffee Table book on The History of Bauhaus. I never expected the book to be as big, full of photos, or as gorgeous as it really is. Large print text by art historian Magdalena Droste. Beautiful Black & White and Color reproductions (some full page) of the art, design, textiles, interiors, metal work, furniture, theatre, workshops, buildings, and architecture of the Bauhaus School (1913-1933). I have only skimmed over the writing which seems to provide an adequate, and at times, detailed overview of the Bauhaus. The binding appears to be good, but I would suggest you handle it with care. How this is being published for so little is beyond me. Taschen seems to have made quite a splash in the world of publishing with their affordable 25th Anniversary Archive Series.Contents include:Preface1. On the Origins of the Bauhaus.2. Weimar Bauhaus-Expressionist Bauhaus.3. Art and Technology-A New Unity.4. Dessau Bauhaus: Institute of Design.5. Hannes Meyer: Necessities, not Luxuries.6. Mies van der Rohe: The Bauhaus Becomes a School of Architecture.7. Appendix. (Which includes a nice list of Photo Biographies of the major players.)I have not included Sub-chapters within the individual Chapter headings. (Look inside the book for these.) There is no Index.A wonderful and affordable book that belongs in every designer and artist's library, about a school of principles, design, and aesthetics that are still influential in the world of contemporary art and design.Nice Work TASCHEN! If you have any interest in the Bauhaus this book is for you. The quality is amazing, as is any Taschen book I have seen. Nice photos compliment the history of the Bauhaus. This book does not play sides to any particular era in its history.

This book is a well written and illustrated document about the most exciting design school of all times. Amongst others interesting facts presented on its pages, some of them got a special attention from me like the difficulties to mantain the school working (even preparing and offering great professionals and materials to industry and society) or the fact on Bauhaus Dessau Building had been planned and designed by its own masters and apprentices.

Nice feeling book and (when I purchased it) it was very affordable. It's a quality binding and printing, but it goes into a lot of background. I was hoping for more pictures and visual examples. However, it is not short of those, either. It is an enjoyable book.

I recieved this book promptly, in perfect (new) condition, still wrapped in the cellophane. It is a wonderful summary of the Bauhaus school, with full-page illustrations and tons of pictures of art from students and masters from the school. There is also a great little biography section for many of the "greats" who emerged from the school, at the end of the book. I would definately buy this book again, especially for the price!

Great to add to your book shelf and to get information and inspiration on the style, designers and the ideology of Bauhaus.

I HAVE BEEN A STUDENT OF ART , DESIGN, ARCHITECTURAL MOVEMENTS AND INTRIGUED BY THE BAUSHAUS SCHOOL FOR MANY YEARS, ESPECIALLY THE WOMEN IN THE MOVEMENT. THOUGH MANY OF THEM WERE TRAINED AS ARCHITECTS, THEY EXCELLED NONETHELESS, AS THE DESIGNERS OF FABRICS , ETC. THE BOOK WAS GENEROUS TO THIS GROUP AND VERY DETAILED IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE MOVEMENT AND IT'S MANY CHANGES DUE TO THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE.

A wonderful book for anyone interested in this important time period. Walter Gropius, the head of the Bauhaus, was a visionary architect who designed (with a partner) the first truly modern building/factory, The Fagus factory. It was built between 1911 and 1913. It still stands today and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I am studying Fine Art and briefly studied the Bauhaus for an Art History module. I was became really interested in its designs and aesthetic as well as its history, and I think this book is perfect for providing a concise overview of the different departments and progression of the school, as well as lots of great photographs! A really beautiful book and great for anyone who wants to know more about the school.

アートブックを専門とする独タッシェン社のカタログ中、おそらく一二を争うロングセラー書籍。1990年の初版から度々版を重ねており、この2006年版は同社の25周年を記念する「タッシェン25」シリーズ中の一冊として、新たに複数の原語版が制作されている。一時期に縮刷されていた判型も初版のそれに戻り、このハードカバー版で気軽に入手できる価格設定も嬉しい。著者のマグダレーナ・ドロステはベルリンにあるバウハウス・アーカイヴに学芸員として勤務。数々の企画展に関わり、バウハウスから派生した工業デザインについてもいくつか著書がある人だ。本書にもその経験と知識は十全に生かされており、15年にわたるバウハウスの運動を「人とモノと社会」の関わりとして綴っている。全256ページというヴォリュームはこの種の書籍として「厚過ぎず・薄過ぎず」というところだが、ことバウハウスを俯瞰するには決して充分とは言えない。この教育機関の持つ多面性について、また背景の歴史や制作された作品と後世への影響、そして多彩な人物像にも迫れば、やはり二倍以上の紙幅が必要だろう。本書もやはりダイジェスト的ではあるものの、著者の視点は常に客観的で目配りがゆきとどき、この「表現主義と合理主義の迷宮」の見所を漏らすことなく、しかも最短距離で案内してくれる。いわば超ベテランのツアコンが引率するバウハウスツアーの趣き。テキストも整然と読みやすく、英国人のような捻った言い回しが無いためすらすらと読める。編集デザインも含め、いかにもドイツ的、というより「すぐれてバウハウス的」な書籍である。図版なども選り抜かれているが豊富ではないので、できれば他の書籍（Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernityなど）と併せて手元に置くことをお勧めしたい。なお購入後に気づいたのだが、本書は日本語版も刊行されている。手元にあるタッシェンジャパンの書籍に照らせば、翻訳は質が高く信頼に足る（本書の内容では和文書体の「たたずまいの異質さ」が気になるところだが、そこに美を求めるならこの英語版よりも独語版を、ということになる）。その日本語版は版元消滅のため市場在庫のみ、新品で入手したい向きは早めの購入を。

This is a well illustrated book covering the fantastic Bauhaus period, it contributors and thinkers.Great book and I was lucky to get it at a good price.

This is a fantastic reference book and very good value. The content is well organised and covers everything in the current Barbican exhibition (2012).
