Giro Scamp MIPS Youth Recreational Cycling Helmet

This helmet looked amazing and fit my 15 month old, BUT the helmet we received did NOT have any labeling to indicate it was MIPS (i.e. the bright yellow tags and label on the back of the helmet.) Even the box said "Scamp" and not "Scamp MIPS." We ended up returning it and ordering the same helmet from another store and that helmet had all of the right labels. So PLEASE be sure that what you receive is actually an MIPS helmet, if that's what you're looking for.

This helmet works well, the size S fits my 2 year old and isn't too big. However, twice now I have ordered the MIPS helmet and been sent the non-MIPS version. They look very similar, so make sure you check to see that you received the one you ordered.

I purchased my daughter this helmet because I liked the MIPS system of head protection. Unfortunately, the way the system is on the helmet it causes hair to get stuck in it every time she puts the helmet on. My daughter could not take off the helmet without screaming in pain as it ripped out her hair and was stuck on her. I have the adult version of this helmet and it is nicely finished inside and this problem seems to have been addressed. It’s really disappointing to see that they skimped on the kids version. Had to return this being that my 5 year old couldn’t even take this helmet off by herself without pulling out large chunks of her hair. Real bummer.

There are little plastic pieces inside this helmet that will get long hair stuck in them and lead to your kid’s hair getting pulled out

We have used this Giro Mips Scamp helmet before, the sizing is incorrect for this “year” of helmet. The website states giro scamp XS is 47-51cm, whereas the helmet we received states XS is 45-49cm. Just double check what year you are buying, this “flower land” Is 2020. Otherwise light weight and seems right size for 4.5 year olds. We also tried Little Nutty, but the appropriate circumference helmet was too large and bulky for use, plus it couldn’t be tightened to stop sliding without snagging lots of hair. I have twin girls with lots of hair I’m not sure how other young children wear the Little Nutty just because of the hair catching in the tightening mechanism alone. Maybe we had a defective year/model but we bought 2 of the same helmet and both had problems. Seemed quality otherwise. We reordered the Giro Mips Scamp in S for 4.5yo with 50cm head circumference.

This helmet fits my 3, nearly 4 year old son perfectly with room to grow, with many different ways to adjust the fit. It offers a snug (but not tight) fit that stays in place while he’s riding his bicycle. I love how the helmet fits properly in the back and doesn’t slip and slide like other helmets I’ve seen preschoolers wear. I’d highly recommend this and purchase again- safety is super important to our family and while this brand of helmet was more expensive than other brands- this minimal extra cost is fully worth the extra protection.

My son’s head circumference was 53cm, it did not fit. Mr big noggin will have to have a bigger helmet. Despite that the helmet looks cool, and I feel confident that it’ll protect my son’s (hopefully) Ivy League brain.

This is our second Giro Scamp MIPS. When our son grew out of his extra small, we moved up to the small size because we were so happy with the product. It’s difficult to find a helmet in this size range with MIPS, which is important to us. It’s totally worth the extra $20. Our son absolutely loves his helmet, so it certainly seems to be comfortable. He often wears it around the house just for fun while riding on his little push car. He also always wears it when he’s on his Strider. He can really get moving quite fast on his balance bike, so it makes us feel better to know that his head is protected.

Shipped fast and arrived in perfect condition. I ordered a size small for my two year old! It fits perfectly and we will be able to use it for a couple years. There is an adjustment knob that makes sure the helmet hugs your kiddos head and isn’t loose. So happy with this!
