It is single edge and legal to carry in most localities unconcealed. The d2 steel has excellent hardness and edge retention. I studied under a late martial arts master in Taekwondo and hand weapons. I was privaledged to receive my black belt under his direct instruction. Specific emphasis was on the karambit as a weapons system when it came to knives. He would have loved this knife and I would have certainly gotten him one if he had not passed. It is robust and balanced well. I own many Karambits that cost in the hundreds and this is as good a fixed blade as any of them. I highly recommend this knife for self defense if you are trained in the use of a karambit. I only use one. I use the top of the clip and one of the guides. Then slide your belt in between the guide and the top of the clip. Depending on how wide your belt is adjust the lower guide to fit.
