Dread Locks #1 (Dark Fusion)

I love Dark Fusion!
These books all take an interesting view of a fairy tale, folklore, or myth. I love things like that - updated or re-imagined stories are just inherently fun for me, especially when I enjoyed the original story. This story is compelling, and you come to feel for the characters, especially (for me at least) Terra. I loved it, and I've read it several times through. I will most definitely read it again as well. As with so many of this author's works, it isn't very long. A night of reading will get you a long way, so it's recommended for those looking for a shorter story or who have trouble making themselves read longer books.

Not bad, just not his best
If this were by any author than Neal Shusterman, I might have given it a higher rating. It isn't that Dread Locks is a bad book: it's an imaginative re-telling of a jumble of fairy-tales, myths and legends and as always Mr Shusterman sucks the reader into his world with ease. The problem? This is an amazing writer who has written amazing works (the Everlost series, Downsiders, Unwind) and I have come to expect that quality from him. So when I read something a little less-than, I'm more disappointed than I would have been if he had been just your run-of-the-mill YA story teller. Had I read this before his other works, I'd probably have given it 3-4 stars; as it is, I want to give it a 2 1/2 which isn't an option. If you find this book, go ahead and read it. It's easy and fun. Then go get one of Shusterman's REAL books and see what he can really do.

Dread Locks is an interesting read
I was never one who believed I would really enjoy Dark Fusion books. I purchased this book at a book fair for less than $5. It was the best deal and a very interesting book. I read the book with my 6th grade students, they LOVED it! It kept them on the edge of their seats and waiting for more each day. I liked it so much, I ordered a classroom set. I can't wait for my students this year to experience this book. I recently ordered two more of the Dark Fusion series and can't wait to read them.

Neal Shusterman is easily becoming one of my all time favorite authors
Neal Shusterman is easily becoming one of my all time favorite authors! Everything he writes holds me enthralled thru the whole story! I found Dread Locks at 2nd & Charles and I got so excited! I was waiting for the next book in another series that Shusterman wrote to get here from Amazon, and this one is short so I read it, and loved it! Shusterman has a way of being philosophical without being pompous or hard to understand. Dread Locks is a mix of fairy tale and myth. Yes, there is a subtle difference between the two and Shusterman weaves them together flawlessly. I honestly have no critique to give with this book. It’s an imaginative story that’s meant to be experienced thru your imagination so don’t expect to take it all literally. There are little lessons to learn throughout; the characters are likeable, they could have easily moved into annoying, but they never did. And my very favorite part of this story is the ending! Holy cow!!! But I can’t tell you, you just gotta read it for yourself!!!! 😊 I’d recommend this to any teen, I think this is a good book to get them into reading. I’d also recommend it to anyone look for a short but interesting read.

Not A Bad Book.
Just not a book that we could get into. Have several other books from same author and love them. We donated this one.
