Secrets of Solo Racing: Expert Techniques for Autocross and Time Trials

GOOD INFO BUT VERY DATED AND WEAKLY ILLUSTRATED
This book was a great introduction into autocross aka solo racing and general racing techniques. While reading, you will definitely be able to tell its dated by the jokes and references, but still very bearable. Parts of the book were hard to understand, as concepts are illustrated with simply drawn pictures and technical wording that not everyone would be familiar with. I was able to apply a lot of what is taught in this book with my first session. However, more autocrosses will be necessary to try some of the other techniques, and fine tuning some of the ones I've already attempted. This book is good to add to your collection of information gathering for improving your autocrossing techniques, but in this day and age of online videos and forums, you have many better options in terms of visually demonstrating proper technique.

A relevant classic
Have read this book a few times, and usually re-read it before a new season. It was written when I was a toddler, but still relevant today, with many useful tips and tidbits. The cars may have changed and tires are a little better, but physics, racing surfaces, and rubber cones have remained the same I think...

An excellent book on fundamentals of high performance driving
Well organized and presented, compactly written, and with information that addresses the needs and anxieties of novice level drivers, while also providing gems of understanding and perspective that can help advanced drivers, this is a book that is not only a good read, but a valuable reference work for those who want to know what is important to learn and master to be an expert performance driver, and for those who already know to be reminded lest they forget! I cannot imagine a motorsports library for a 'driver' that does not have this book. The focus on safety and preparation is particularly notable, and important. It may have been written more than 20 years ago, but as the laws of physics have not changed, neither has the value of the perspectives and insights in this book diminished. Once you have learned what is presented in this book you will be well positioned to enjoy high performance driving, competitive autocross or time trials, or move into wheel to wheel racing events should that be your desire.

Great!
I am reading this along with "Ultimate Speed Secrets". Either book on its own did not give me as many "aha" moments compared to reading them together. One example. "Ultimate Speed Secrets" makes it sound like you should ALWAYS be trail braking, no matter what. I tried this and sped up a tiny bit. "Secrets of Solo Racing" gives me further enlightenment (and speed) by noting that the best use for trail braking is when you want to induce oversteer, otherwise its best to use approach braking. This makes a lot of sense because with approach braking you can get on the gas sooner, which will give better exit speed.Hopefully this was a good example of how the books are good together.I suggest you get both.

Great for beginners
The intended audience appears to be people whom have just started, or are thinking about it. The material is still good, but less so for a seasoned racer. If you are new to Solo, this is a great resource.

absolutely fantastic, except I wish...
Great book, I just wish they would have had a diagram of a full course and how to run it. They showed one turn, with a late apex. made sense! They showed linking turns with early apex, into late apex. Made sense! But then when I got to the course for the first time, and it was like 75 linking turns? YIKES!Still, this book taught me A LOT...

Great book on AX driving skills
Great book on AX driving skills. I've reviewed it over the years and always derive additional awareness of how to improve. Recently purchased 3 more copies to give to friends who have either started out or are needing extra coaching.

Some tips
In spite of the title there are more pages on circuit racing and time trials than autoslalom. It needs more details on the rapid transitions required for autocross.

Great read
It's a 4 star read in 2015 but there has been a lot of technological change in automobiles, so a revision and update would be welcome.
