Are the tray bottoms solid wood, or a composite?

It is a thin solid piece of wood.

Hi! Can these trays be painted or stained without destroying them or the paint rubbing off?

Yes, they can be painted or stained, but make sure you use a sealer after .

Is there any toxins or finish on these trays?

Hi no there is no finish on these trays. As far as toxins are concerned I would imagine they would be introduced if there was some kind of coating Or like a finish lacquer or some thing on the trays. But the ones that I received did not have any finish on them Assuming also that there are no toxins it's just a completely natural wood. They're really nice actually I was really pleased with them how they all fit inside each other and the sturdiness of the trays I really like them definitely consider buying them again.Because I use them for gifts I put gifts inside the trays first with like a wrapping paper and tissue paper I line the trays and then I fill it with gifts and then I put like a clear wrapping paper over them with a nice bow.
