Dog Days: Dispatches from Bedlam Farm

I have been a fan of Jon Katz since his Suburban Detective mysteries. I discovered one of his dog memoirs in an airport a few years ago, and since then I have collected them all, not to read all at once, but to save when I need a pick-me-up and know I will get some really fine writing.Dog Days may be my favorite of them all. (Of course, I probably feel that way about every installment right after I have read it.) I liked the "Dispatches" format, each chapter dealing with a particular topic or animal. It seems more leisurely. Jon Katz himself seems less frantic and more at ease in the skin of a country gentleman.I am absolutely astonished at the reviewers who judge Katz's decisions to put down or rehome an animal. He clearly agonizes over each decision, and he puts the animal's needs before his own. It is quite moving, really. Also his training methods are his own, and good for him. There is no one right way to train every dog, or even every dog of a given breed. I love how Katz studies the animal, analyzes the situation, and listens to the advice of people he thinks are smarter than him.Katz writes beautifully. I feel privileged to live in his life between the covers of each book.

I borrowed this book from the library to keep me company while I cook. My 10 year old loved it so much it disappeared inside her room and she listened to it constantly. The reader is pleasant to listen too and the stories are funny, though provoking and insightful. Of course I had to return it to the library so we ended buying our own. I bought a copy for my father too who loves it also.

This was a book club selection. After reading we spent a night at a farmhouse B and B...we got to see their sheepdog round up a pregnant goat and get her in the delivery barn.

Reading

I had this book before our house burned down. I recently re-ordered it, when I remembered it. I have already re-read it. Because of this I have decided to order other books by Jon Katz; he is an excellent writer and I find the topic easy to read and fun.

One of the best quick reads I have seen in a long time. Brings back many fond memories of my grandparents farm.

I just love Katz's style. I don't even own a dog but his books are great reads for anyone.

Jon Katz continues to amaze me with each of his stories about his rich & fulfilinglife on his farm. The people he meets along with the donkeys & dogs he adopts allcome together for some of the best most enjoyable reading I have ever experienced.Along the way you are learning life lessons right along with Jon who seems todiscover new details about himself & the world around him at every turn of the page. He has written many books & I would recommend them all!
