SebagoMen's Docksides Boat Shoe

Bottom Line: Excellent, comfortable nu-buck alternative to Sperry’s
Bottom Line: Excellent, comfortable nu-buck alternative to Sperry’sWhat is the appeal of boat shoes? They’re simple, comfortable and convenient; they can be slipped on and off with ease, worn with or without socks (go no socks), and they pair well with chino’s, jeans and shorts.Right out of the box, I was impressed with the smooth, soft nu-buck exterior. The nap is ever so slight with a velvet touch and the texture can be appreciated both visually and physically. The construction is especially solid with the Docksides being flexible and close to the ground which presents an interesting dichotomy; while I wouldn’t go on hikes with them or unusually long walking day trips, they are very relaxed and non-restrictive compared to Sperry’s, which tend to be stiffer boat shoes. So what does that mean? Great for casual and boating use, not so great for walking the length of Manhattan. The upper and interior linings are made from heavy-duty leather, with brass eyelets for the rawhide laces which are suitably thick to prevent breaking but not so thick to prevent easy lacing. The outsoles are rubber (compared to man-made soles which are made from cheaper plastic). Rubber outsoles are non-marking and slip-resistant.Usually reserved for spring and summer use, the shoes should last for quite a many years, depending on levels of abuse. If you’re a landlubber, these can easily go a decade. The design is not unnecessarily garish so these bad boys will never date themselves in the long run.Better arch support would have made these a 5 but keep in mind, that's rare for boat shoes.

Through the socks and into the skin...
First - these shows are since almost 20 years my go-to shoes (no pun indented). I could order them and walk in them the first day without any issues; for many years I knew each new pair would be comfortable. Not lately. They seem to be stiffer at first but soften up of course. However, the last pair I got are unbearable and unwearable. There are stitches in the middle of the back of the shoe that rub against the skin with each step - through the socks and within half a day through the skin. I can only wear them with thick blister bandaids and even those got destroyed. I might give them another try but am very disappointed. Not sure if manufactoring changed over the years.

Second pair, and plan to buy again when needed. I wear them nearly every day.
This is my second pair. I live in Thailand and need black shoes for everyday use that I can slip on and off easily, and that look good. Dress here in Thailand, and on my campus, is quite important and shoes are part of that dress image. Therein lies a long and fun cultural difference about shoe size, shoe polish, and what shoes are formal, since students wear shoes to match their university uniform. My feet are too big to buy shoes here so Amazon is the place for me. While I have some dress shoes for dress occasions, I wear these Sebagos nearly every day. The first pair wore out from use after 2 years of nearly daily wear (soles got worn and some leather cracks appeared after the rainy season) . This new pair is even better. The soles show no wear after a few months, I think the material for the sole has changed, and the leather keeps a polish quite well - I forgot my polishing cloth on a 6 week trip and the shoes looked great every day. I have added cushion insoles for comfort and they work well by adding a little comfort for my old and tired feet.

They look much more expensive and good quality than they are
I expected to receive something average but I've been wearing these regularly for quite a while now and they're doing great. No signs of poor stitching or other construction anywhere on the shoe. They fit great and feel comfortable. I can't say that about a whole lot of shoes, but I can say that about these. The bottom is rubber, so Keep looking if you're searching for shoes with a different bottom. To me it doesn't matter. As you can see in the images I took of them, they're made of very nice material and look better than in the product image provided.I would definitely buy these again.

Well done, Sebago
I bought the brown leather with the brown-ish outsole and was concerned they'd look too dressy or old. They do in a way right out of the box; but, when you wear them and they develop their creases and wear marks...Wow, they make a rapid transition from old and stodgy to vintage and cool. Kind of like a Saddleback bag for your feet. I've owned many pair of Docksides in the past and think Sebago's are terrific when built properly. They aren't always nor are the left and right always a good visual match; but, this recent pair is excellent including the 3/4 leather footbed remaining glued after a couple weeks of wearing. As for sizing, the 11 bends exactly where my size 10.5 foot (arch length on Brannock) bends. FWIW, I wear an 11 in Chucks, 10.5 in most Allen Edmonds dress shoes and 11.5 in Brooks & Nike running shoes.

SQUEAKS!!!
Squeaks! When new, socks made a rubbing noise on the smooth bottom of the inside of the shoe. I sanded the leather slightly to stop that. Then, about two weeks later they started to squeak from inside the shoe. Seems to be coming from the layers between the rubber bottom and the insole. Nothing stops it besides walking on one side of my foot. Both shoes squeak. Very annoying and I wouldn't buy this brand again as a result. Otherwise, very good looking for the price level. Comfort is so-so since there isn't a lot of cushion. Good enough for the office, but wouldn't want to walk around for a long time.

Poor quality. A rip off!
These cut my heals due to messy stitching in the back of the shoes; I had to remove all this carefully myself. Also the insoles came adrift after a couple of months and again, I had to take them out, clean them up, and glue them in properly myself. I should be charging them!! And I probably should have sent them back straight away as it is too late now.I have been happy paying the extra for Sebago in the past but they have clearly dropped their quality but NOT their prices.I would give no stars if I could; DO NOT BUY.

Cheap imitation rubbish
Another example of AMAZON selling cheaper (probably Chinese) imitation clothing / shoes under a brand name. Same brand as a previous purchase SEBAGO DOCKSIDES. Same colour. Same size (UK 9.5) yet different shoe to original that doesn’t fit and is clearly on receipt a “copy”.

Not for real leather officianados!
If you like real leather shoes that obviously smell of leather and if you scratch the surface, it always leaves a scuff mark, then these are not for you. When I opened the box I was assailed by the strongest smell of plastic and when I scratched the surface, it left no mark. They are made in in the Dominican Republic, well known for real leather items! They were very expensive, as befits the best Sebago shoes, but sadly, they fall way, way short, which is why they are going straight back.

Too small: returned for replacement
Despite being my size (42Eu) they were too small and i was obliged to return them: I have had Docksiders many times before but always purchased from a shoe shop. Clearly a pitfall in online shopping Quality however was excellent, and return and replacement rapid. The replacement shoe 43 Eu fitted perfectly but was the wrong colour. This has put me off ordering shoes online for good

Get ready for some serious blisters
I received the shoes on time and they look just like the picture. Over the years I’ve had dozens of pairs of topsiders/Sperry shoes. For whatever reason, these shoes absolutely tore apart my feet. I wore them on vacation for a long weekend and had blisters in two different places on both feet. I assumed I just needed those pressure points to break in/my feet to callous and tried them again a couple weeks later. After walking a little over a mile in the shoes I had to stop at a shoe store and buy a different pair and ultimately throw these away. I have never had to do this before. These shoes may not be brutal for your feet as everyone is different, but I would recommend trying them around the house before venturing out with them.
