The music is decidedly more cabaret than the previous CD, 2005's The Quiet Room. However, The Smother Party does feature two lengthy instrumentals including the monumental "Gutterhelmet Ascending," a highly dynamic, organic long-form duo piece for drums and distorted accordion by Alec K. Redfearn and Matt McLaren. Slow, simmering noir-ish dirges, spastic no-wave tangos, repetitive rhythmic conundrums, Weimar-style cabaret songs, drunken revelry, crippling depression, extreme self loathing, Catholic guilt, clanking, scraping and radio noise are some of the many facets that make up The Eyesores' sound.
