What do i meed to buy to create a "U" shaped configuration ?

Maybe the seller can give you a better answer.

I bought these to mount on the side of the beams of a post and beam structure but now im reading that it isn't the best application. Why not?

The fixtures clip onto the track in a way that has them supported vertically. If you mount the track on the side, the weight of the fixture will be trying to peel he fixtures out if the track. It may work with lighter/smaller fixtures but it’s not recommended.

is there a way to get the mounting hardware? Its a nice track but I did not get the end part that allows it to connect to the house wiring

the track can be attached to the ceiling with screws. You need to buy that end part that connects to the wiring. It IS sold separately by Amazon
