Effective but lack of packing thought on choice of flint.
Flint was pretty useless that came with it and i replaced it. Plus the flint was too big for this tin size. A little more thought needed by the supplier. However on replacing the flint with another one this is a great little set. The pipe bellows are a nice touch and come in useful for my mini-wood stove at times to get the heat up a little. To create the char cloth i used a little mints tin, which now sits inside this tin also, as well as another small tin containing some cotton wall soaked in Vaseline and a small ferro rod and striker as a great secondary fire starter thus creating a fantastic little kit all in the one tin now which was big enough to carry them all. So overall (flint aside) this is a great little kit, that has room to be added to if you chose to.

Shockingly it actually works
(Purchase: Flint Steel Striker only)As a closet prepper Ive always been interested in traditional fire starting techniques, and I have used nearly all of them, except bow-drill and flint-and-steel. (fyi Ferrocerium rods are NOT flint-and-steel, but Ive used them too)I got this because of a US prepper video I watched, explaining how to use one, and I could not resist. I bought this, and it did not work. Then I kept trying, according to the video, and it did not work. Then after much practise, perfecting my wrist action, and striking the sharp edge of a piece of quarts, it finally worked.Once you figure out how these things work, and practise a bit, they are brilliant. You WILL need to strike on perfect tinder, and really know what "perfect" tinder is. But they DO work.I am a pragmatist, and frankly if someone asked me what to put in a bug-out bag I would suggest a BIC lighter. They do not measurably leak fuel, you can store them for decades, they work on demand, and require no training. They are the perfect fire lighting tool. But they run out of gas eventually.... perhaps quickly. This steel striker will spark off minerals like flint or quartz. Where I live we dont have those precise minerals, but walking along the coast during one day, I managed to find over ten different stones that were "crystalline" in nature, that all produced a spark. (I think one is called churtz, which is brownish quarts)I cant stress this enough: I considered buying a "flint" but when I went out looking for them, I found more than I needed by just keeping my eye out (once you start looking, you see them everywhere).I guess what Im saying is that if you have one of these steel strikers, you will always be able to produce fire. The steel wont wear out in your lifetime however much you strike it, and suitable stones are only a walk away. If you can learn how to use it, and learn how to prepare decent kindling, buying one of these means that you have a lifetime access to fire in your pocket.Personally, Im buying a spare in case I lose my first. Great product.

Excellent carbon steel striker...
Excellent carbon steel striker supplied with a handful of flint stones and small pieces of charcloth. I was able to strike a spark onto the cloth and start a fire within a few strikes. Excellent tool and lots of fun. I am yet to try the fire bow pivot point feature, but I have no doubt it would fit the task perfectly. Very happy with the purchase and product.

It works.
Arrived today, looks like the tin has been sat on by big daddy and giant haystacks then thrown under a steamroller, once I find a new tin then it will be ok as it gives good sparks. Nice little emergency kit for when the crap hits the fan.

Not sure about the temper or it might just be the poor 'flint'.
I've forged a few fire steels and I'm holding out till I can get home to try it with better flint than supplied as the sparks I can get with this kit are few and dull. It might be a poor temper but the supplied chert (I'm used to using chalk flint) is poorly knsped with rounded edges and not enough material for me to flake off a better edge.
