The Impact of a Great Coach and Mentor
Coming from a Foreign Country, Gerald Hector, the Author of this extraordinary book had no idea what awaited him at Howard University. Meeting Coach William P. Moultrie was not by chance, in my opinion it was part of Gerald’s destiny. Although Coach Moultrie’s guidance may have appeared to be very challenging to Gerald at times, Coach was strengthening him, and giving him the salt to make him thirsty. Gerald became obedient. Excellence does come with a cost. Experience strengthens the character that lays dormant within.Coach Moultrie was a brilliant leader who was instrumental in shaping the lives of not only Gerald, but many of his proteges, who have also become very successful in their careers, as referenced at the end of the chapters. A profound Scripture quoted, “listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future”. Proverbs 19:20.I was one of Gerald Hector’s Manager’s at Johnson C Smith University. As a leader, he was a positive influence on my professional career and remains that way today. In a conversation we once had not too long ago he stated, ‘’He was waiting for God to release him”, and he did. Gerald’s accomplishments are legendary. This book is an excellent inspirational read and a life changing memoir.

A Book of Wisdom from and Athlete and Scholar Reflecting His Jamaican Heritage
This is a conversational book sharing many life lessons using the focus of the Howard College Track coach who hadenormous influence on the author but many others as well. He weaves candid experiences and reflections on his sporting life and his subsequent leadership opportunities. He has served as Vice-president for Financial Affairs at Cornell and now at Morehouse College in Atlanta, repaying the rich experiences in one of the HBCU's that provided his education. This is a wonderful book for a young person to read.

Relatable on So Many Levels
Easily 5 stars. Great anecdotes, insightful lessons learned, and relatable experiences for anyone who had the daunting challenge of immigrating to pursue studies overseas. This book was written to celebrate a coach and mentor, William P Moultrie, who provided a life changing opportunity for the author, Gerald Hector. From the first in person meeting, to track meets, to humbling lessons on the golf course, Gerald was able to share pivotal experiences, missteps and triumphs; and the integral role coach played in ensuring the lessons learned and life experiences weren’t overlooked. Humor and course correcting after missteps are skillfully captured in this book, giving the reader reasons to pause and evaluate how we approach our own daily challenges. While the nucleus of this book centers on the relationship with coach, his quips and life lessons; there is a remarkable parallel drawn between the Star Apple fruit and common sense. Gerald’s adroitness was on full display here, in articulating that which is evident and accessible; often times is unattainable due to our approach in harvesting. This book was an enjoyable read, and I do hope Gerald considers authoring others. His post collegiate years seem equally as interesting, and there were avenues broached upon in this current book that I believe deserve further exploration and expansion.

Great story of a great man.
As a track coach myself. It is a humbling experience to see the respect and impact Coach Moultrie had on his athletes.Gerald has out into words so much of the challenges and opportunities that athletes encounter and how a well placed word of encouragement makes a difference.Great job Gerald. I will definitely read again.
