Owen Wister's 1902 western novel The Virginian was one of the first great novels of the American West. Set in the semi-mythical town of Medicine Bow, Wyoming in the 1890s, it chronicled the lives and relationships of the people who came west and settled the wild land. The Virginian was the first 90 minute television western, airing in prime time on NBC from 1962-1971. While James Drury and Doug McClure continued in their roles as The Virginian and Trampas, Season Five saw many changes in Medicine Bow. The great Charles Bickford joined the cast as the proprietor of the Shiloh Ranch, along with Sara Lane, Don Quine and Clu Gulager, breathing fresh life into the show and recapturing its top ratings. The impressive list of talented guest stars in Season Five include Angie Dickinson and Warren Oates (Ride to Delphi), Susan Strasberg (The Captive), Dan Duryea (The Challenge), Myrna Loy (Lady of the House), Pernell Roberts (The Long Way Home), Andy Devine (Yesterday's Timepiece), and many more.

Great acting !
The whole season is great entertainment for family, James Drury's the best! If you're a fan it will be well worth your investment and time.

Shout does it again, another knock out of the park
This season 5 of "The Virginian" has great video and color, thanks to Shout and it re-newly re-mastered entire seasons of this great western. Granted when it went to "The Men of Shiloh" it lost some of its past glory. But this 5th season even though not cheap is a great addition to my Collection. Nice prints.

Fantastic Television Drama
The 1966-67 has Charles Bickford, Don Quine, and Sara Lane join the cast. Great guest stars include Myrna Loy, Harrison Ford, Susan Clark, and many others. No special features. Each episode runs over an hour and 16 minutes except one which runs over an hour and 14 minutes. Clu Gulager was gone the first part of the season but was back in the credits and episodes later on. Lee J. Cobb was gone and explained that he sold to his old friend Mr. Granger. A picture of Roberta Shore as Betsy and a note is left for Elizabeth played by Sara Lane.No explanation is given for the exits of Randy Boone, Diane Roter, John Dehner, and Clu Gulager who was replaced as sheriff for the first part of the season. Each episode is like a great dramatic movie. Trampas, played by Doug McClure, is given several great episodes as the lead, as are the other cast members.

THE BEST WESTERN
When season 5 starts, you have to get used to the fact that judge GARTH and BETSY are really gone and that JOHN GRAINGER and his grandchildren ELIZABETH and STACY will try to remplace them.It was not easy but CHARLES BICKFORD,SARA LANE and DON QUINE managed to distinguish themselves and finally win us over. The VIRGINIAN had great scripts and season 5 is just as good as the other years. As usual there are some great episodes among the 29 of that season.Among many i liked BELOVED OUTLAW about a special horse that ELIZABETH cherishes and THE LONG WAY HOME in which PERNELL ROBERTS gives a very good performance. One of the joys of the DVD age is that you can watch a serie like the VIRGINIAN.Of all the westerns of the sixties, the VIRGINIAN was the best.

Great show:) Skipping discs:(
The episodes are great! We really enjoy watching them as a family. This season 5, however, we have had trouble with the discs skipping and freezing. It ends up skipping over the majority of a scene. We haven't had trouble with any of the previous seasons. I returned the one set of season 5 and reordered. Amazon was good about it, however I believe they still charged a restocking fee even though it was defective merchandise. The replacements still have bad spots. I am wondering if there was some kind of programming defect in this particular season? It has been a bit disappointing since we enjoy the shows so much.

Good Series, Good Value (prime discount)
Bought it for my Dad who is a fan of the series. It maybe expensive for an old series but there is a lot of content here. Each episode is practically a self contained movie with guest stars and a story that reaches a satisfying end. (Events of the different episodes do carry over from episode to episode though, so don't worry about that.) I should note that I paid about $33 for this due to my Prime membership. If you have to pay $60 here then you're still getting a great item, but you'll have to decide whether it's worth $60 to you. To put it into perspective, a new PS4 game costs $60, so there is that.

Another Great Season
I just love all The Virginian seasons, as I find they are the best for humour and fun along with being great western cowboys and good natured with it. The season 5 set has 10 DVDs and I have enjoyed them all with lots of further watchings as I never get bored with the characters as each episode is different, and are still very enjoyable to watch, and it's usually Trampas who makes me laugh at times.
