Why use this instead of just a normal thermal camera?

Hi, Matt M. Totally agree with you - if you need only just to spot the problem area (leakage in a wall or elsewhere) intending to fix it and get rid of it - the very Flir's C2 or TG165 would be pretty handy and cover all the needs of this piece/type of job. The MR160 is a multi-tool for those who need to "Locate the Enemy and MEASURE the Hostility" for some specific needs or considerations. )

Question 2

If i need to find a steam leak in a 7000 sq ft apartment building, should i get this or the tg165?

I would get the MR176 because the Thermal Imager may pick up the steam and the change in temperature, not just look for moisture.

Question 3

Is this essentially the same camera as the tg165 but with extra features that make it good for moisture?

Not at all, the thermal imager is so so. But the true benefit is the ability to read the moisture content of material and to have all your customized readings on the screen at all times, including relative humidity, ambient air, etc. I have the 176 which does probe testing and also has a pad on the back of the unit, this pad lets you pull a reading without destructive measures (awesome for general walk arounds)! Can't remember what the other models offered, but I am happy with the 176. Great for mold and home inspections. I do also have an additional flir thermal imager. I definitely recommend one with MSX technology. The difference is unreal! Good Luck.

Hello John Jo,A thermal camera and moisture meter would perform the same tasks. The convenience and innovation on the MR160 is that the unit will do the job of both separate units. The IR function in the MR160 is for visual guidance, where a thermal camera may provide more detailed temperature information. Best Regards...
