Ethnography of Homeless Women
Read this book for my Urban Anthropology class, but was very distraught over the material. While on the one hand, I felt the material was relevant to the subject matter, I felt conflicted that this type of material discussing rape, prostitution and explicit drug use was not really appropriate for college aged individuals. Waterston glosses over serious issues as though the women in the book are nothing more than stereotypes. I felt there was a serious lack of identifying and empathizing with the homeless women discussed in the book. While the reading was relatively easy, which was useful for public college classes, I was personally very hurt by the lifestyles discussed which very much paralleled my own. This book in fact seriously has left me with a trauma demonstrating the lack of concern professors and administration have with regards to very real issues. Really was hoping to love this book, but to be honest, I couldn't even finish it on account of the material which felt very personal in nature as I have had bouts with homelessness in my own life.
