Tannoy Gold 5 5 inch Powered Studio Monitor

Tannoy is a grand old brand of loudspeakers made in England going back to the 1920s. They've made some of the finest speakers ever for HiFi and professionals. The coaxial design solves the problem of Time Alignment for a smooth crossover region you can't get with most speaker designs.A few years back they were bought out by Behringer and production is being moved to China. Totally mixed emotions as I'm sorry for those good people in England and Scotland that lost their jobs. But otherwise, I would not have been able to afford such nice speakers for my computer. This is the upside of globalism.These are nearfield monitors intended for professionals. Nearfield means you need to sit close to them with the speakers and your head forming an equilateral triangle of 24" or less. If you want to fill a room with music, there are better choices. Unlike Bose and Polk or whatever, these are here to tell you the truth, not what you may want to hear. So no hyped bass or treble. And with 5" drivers you'll want a sub if need powerful bass for your Hip Hop or Metal or whatever.I use them at a computer for creating music with Ableton and a Kemper digital guitar amp. For that purpose they are fantastic. Very crisp and clear with a sweet high end that never gets tiring. Fantastic for classical music and Jazz and even Prog Metal when the mood strikes me.I use a Digidesign audio interface for my DAC. I was getting some high pitched whining sounds only audible when turned up and no sound playing. That was rectified with some balanced TRS cables. Now they are dead quiet with no sound playing. I use Auralex pads to acoustically isolate them from the desk. I was looking at ADAM, a great German company that's also making some products in China now. But those are rear ported and that is a problem when you place the speakers with their backs near a wall causing weird things to happen in the bass region.Amazing little monitors for the money.

These are the perfect desktop studio monitors. Extremely versatile. I have a burr brown dac paired to them and it's like honey poured into your ears. The type of speaker that makes you dust off all your old music just to hear it again for the first time. Pretty standard for british audio though. I've had many monitors and speakers on my desk over the years but these are worth their weight in gold... ;-)
